  7. consoling • adj.  Comforting. Marcia's father gave her a consoling hug after she wrecked her bike. 

  8. discouraged • adj.  Disheartened; in a low mood because of a disappointment. Having never won a baseball game, Nathan felt very discouraged.

  9. endurance • n.  The ability to keep going without giving in to stress or tiredness. A marathon runner must have exceptional endurance. 

  10. sessions • n.  A gathering held for a special purpose. The students met in the library for a study session before the final test.

  11. sprints • n.  A short race run at top speed. Runners don't have to pace themselves when they run sprints. 

  12. squad • n.  A small group of people organized for an activity. Antonio hopes to become a member of the football squad. 

  13. unconventional • adj.  Out of the ordinary. Nowadays, wearing an old-fashioned top hat is unconventional.

  26. A Real Jazzy Kid! • With your suit partner, read pages 470-473 from your text using the skills mentions in the yellow column on the left of page 404. When you are finished discuss these questions with your partner. Do you think Sergio’s advice on page 472 might be helpful to kids interested in activities other than music? Why or why not? What goals do you think Sergio’s parents have for him? How does Sergio feel about the success he has achieved? Why does he feel that way? In what ways is Sergio similar to Jackie when she was young?
