Class Characteristics • The class is composed of 10 students with varying degrees of English proficiency. • All students are native Spanish speakers. • Two of my 10 students prefer to respond to all questions in Spanish • In terms of ability, most students are in the “C” category. There are two high performers and two students who will probably fail for the year.

  4. Themes • As I put together this unit plan, I discovered several themes involvingthe content, my students and methods of teaching

  5. Learning by Actively Seeking Knowledge • Having students demonstrate for themselves that the mathematical proofs really work • This process allows them to acquire the knowledge actively versus passive listening • Vocabulary building and word problems help reinforce this process

  6. All Math is Interconnected • Activate Prior Knowledge • Review prior lesson with students both as a warm-up and refresher • Link new material to the old based on commonalities • Use “Proven Theorems” from prior lessons as a way of establishing new knowledge

  7. Multiple Intelligences • There are many ways to prove or solve a problem • Not all math proofs need to be numerical • Some can be visual, logical, analytical or kinesthetic

  8. A good teacher is like a good host • Put students into a comfort zone • Give them choices – groups, assessments • Keep students entertained • Empowers them to grow to their potential • Shares with students – both successes and failings

  9. Proof of Pythagorean Theorem • Kids love technology and vivid colors

Vocabulary is Important - All Teachers should be teach English • Right triangle(triángulo rectángulo)– a triangle(3 sided polygon) which has 1 right angle. • Right angle(derecho de angulo)– an angle that measures 90 degrees • Hypotenuse(hipotenusa)– the side of the triangle opposite the right angle • Legs(piernas)– the two sides of the triangle which form the right angle

Pythagorean Theorem • Longest side is the hypotenuse, side c (opposite the 90o angle) • The other two sides are the legs, sides a and b • a2 + b2 = c2 • In a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse • In a right triangle, the sum of the areas of the two small squares is equal to the area of the larger.”

  12. Scaffolding is important • Start off easy • Work your way into harder problems • Be supportive and complimentary to lower affective filter • One size fits all approach does not work • Push just a little at a time out of comfort zone( critical input + 1) • End on a positive note

  13. Have Fun • Keep things light • Use humor and poke fun of yourself • Celebrate success • Know when to slow down or back off
