  2. Target groups • Patients/ Clients – mainly children & women. • Staff

  3. THE VULNERABLE

  4. Meeting held with Municipal Housing Officer, as a pts boarder had claimed her house whilst she was in hospital receiving treatment, refusing her access & had lock changed. Result: Patient to be reinstated in her home. Examples: Patients

  5. Meeting held with the Dept.of Housing & patient to get grant approved for completion of house-build for pt with MND. Provide financial stability and safe abode for wife & children once pt no longer able to provide for their needs.

  6. Assisted HIV female patient to secure a job at the local step-down facility – Siyabonga. Financial assistance obtained whereby single mom can support herself & 3 children.

  7. Obtained birth certificate in order to secure a child grant. Financial assistance to ensure that pt’s mother is remunerated for having to be at home to care for her.

  8. Teaching of life skills regarding balance of work responsibilities & family commitments. Increased awareness of availability of options & empowerment due to self determination.

  9. Assistance regarding change of beneficiary details in policy Improved self-esteem due to improved knowledge regarding the approach to resolving important financial issues.

  10. Assisted a female pt re: housing. Living in unhygienic, overcrowded conditions with her 3 children. Discovered she has a RDP house, presently occupied by another family. Possible resolution of unhygienic housing conditions in an amicable manner, only involving the department of housing if required.

  11. A wife & mother of 4 children was looking for an opportunity to assist her husband in providing financial stability for the family. Provided her with a letter of motivation to start her own business selling fruit & beverages at the local clinic.

  12. Female patient, & single mother who works part-time, wanted to further her studies & find a better job. Assistance provided with application to study, she was accepted & is now becoming empowered with skills & knowledge which will lead to financial stability

  13. Assisted female pt with no dependents to have a will drawn up to disperse of her belongings as she wished. She had expressed concern that relatives would not honour her verbal request in this regard. Patient at peace & requiring less analgesia since the will was drawn up.

  14. Assisted terminally ill female patient to leave her home to her daughter, in her current situation where her live-in boyfriend is abusive. Patient passed away peacefully & daughter legally entitled to the house which will provide safety & security.

  16. Assisted female home-based carer to apply to Cape Peninsula University of Technology to do the 4 year nursing course. Possible acceptance to tertiary educational facility & improve future economic situation.

  17. All nursing staff currently being immunised against hepatitis B. Provide immunity to staff vulnerable to hepatitis due to the nature of their work & particularly with regard to home-based carers, the financial inability to pay for the relevant treatment.

  18. Assisted female home-based carer to obtain the relevant information in order to apply to UNISA to study social work. Information gained in order to make an informed decision as to whether she would like to pursue this opportunity for self development.

  19. Assisted 2 home-based carers to attend a meeting regarding small business development. Gained information to start their own part-time business & increase their current income.

  20. Decision reached by the palliative care sisters that assistance would be given to the home-based carers whenever one of their children becomes ill. RN would examine the child & assist mother to make a decision re: action & treatment. Improved financial situation of women who earn stipends & improved job satisfaction due to colleagues being supportive & needed in the case of the RN’s.
