Return to RCPReturn to Matrix Artifact 16 The following artifact reflects a power point presentation describing my social action project that the student teachers and I completed this semester at Kipps Elementary. The student teachers and I created over 70 interactive learning boards for the students to use as a review of the curriculum and for the SOLs in the four main subject areas, as well as physical education, health education, and the arts. In order to reach out to the community, we also hosted a Family Fun Game Night for the students and their families to come and play the games while enjoying refreshments and prizes. In addition to showing growth over time, the following artifact demonstrates how I have successfully met the following ACEI Standards: 1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4. Issue • After discussing the issue with Mr. Kitts, the principal, and the teachers, we wanted to find a fun, interactive way for students to review for the SOLs and to enhance the curriculum. • A few 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers had started interactive learning board templates, and we wanted to expand their efforts to contribute to the overall school community.

Project Description • The student teachers collaborated with one another, with other teachers in the school, and researched the Standards of Learning and curriculum to come up with ideas for the interactive learning boards. • One of our goals was to create portable, interactive games that students could complete and check on their own to monitor and enhance their understanding of the curriculum in preparation for the SOLs.

Project Description (cont.) • Another one of our goals was to create master copies of the interactive learning boards, so they could be easily duplicated in the future to create class and/or grade sets. • To combine our goals while reaching out to the community, we hosted a “Family Fun Game Night.”

Family Fun Game Night • The night included an opportunity for families to come play the interactive games together in a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. • We set up the cafeteria with our interactive learning boards divided by grade level (3rd-5th) and a section for the “specials” (health education, physical education, and the arts). • We also included traditional board games to add to the fun.

Family Fun Game Night • We provided healthy snacks and drinks, such as fruit, popcorn, pretzels, chips and salsa, cookies and milk, apple juice, orange juice, and lemonade. • We raffled off prizes, such as Coldstone gift certificates and bowling passes, and gave away prizes to all children in attendance. • Positive behavior was reinforced with Buck-A-Roos (the school wide positive behavior initiative).

  7. Advertising the Night • To spread the word, we used the following methods: • Sent a parent/guardian letter home a week before the event and a reminder the day before • Listed on school website • Posted flyers around the school • Created skits on “Roo News,” the school morning announcements

  8. Letter to Parents/Guardians March 14, 2007 Pajama Game Night! March 27th, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Dear Parents, The student teachers in conjunction with their cooperating teachers would like to invite you to a “Family Fun Game Night” on Tuesday, March 27th from 7 to 8 p.m. This semester, the student teachers of Virginia Tech have worked hard to making learning fun and interactive for their students. We have created interactive games dealing with certain areas of the curriculum that are both fun and educational for the whole family. This is a great opportunity for you to come play board games with your children as well as for the children to show you the interactive boards that we have been working on the last month. We would love for you to bring your family members, neighbors, friends, or anyone else that might want to participate. Also, please feel free to wear PJs to our Family Fun Game Night to help you relax, be comfortable, and enjoy playing the games. We will provide cookies, fruit, popcorn, and multiple drinks including lemonade and fruit juice during the event for everyone to enjoy. Please join us for some family fun!   9. The Making of the Boards Here are pictures of our workstation where we collaborated and shared resources to construct the interactive learning boards. We made over 70 boards in the core and specialty subjects. Most of our boards were made with manila folders, handouts, pictures, lamination, and LOTS of Velcro.

  17. Success! • Over 45 students attended the night • Over 50 parents and siblings also attended • We were excited about the turnout considering there was a math game night the night before and a women’s history celebration later in the week.

  18. Reflection To come up with the ideas for the learning boards, the student teachers and I collaborated with one another, with teachers from the third through fifth grades, the Virginia Standards of Learning, and with the principal of Kipps. Together, the student teachers and I made over 70 different boards in the four main subject areas, along with physical education, health education, and the arts. The learning boards were a great way for the students to review what they are learning throughout the curriculum and prepare themselves for the SOLs. The student teachers and I also made master copies and templates for the teachers and grade levels to use in the future to duplicate the learning boards to eventually make classroom and grade level sets. The Family Fun Game Night was a wonderful way for the student teachers to reach out to the community and to introduce our interactive learning boards to the students and their families. Several families and students attended the night making a great turnout. Everyone was invited to wear pajamas to help them feel comfortable and have fun playing the games with one another and their families. The students were able to earn prizes and enjoy refreshments with their families and friends. The night was also a great opportunity for the student teachers to get to know the community and their students’ families better. The Family Fun Game Night was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone!
