  2. First Person The narrator is one of the characters in the story First person pronouns, such as I, me, my, and mine are used in narration Because the narrator is a character within the story, he/she may not be completely reliable We only know what this character knows, thinks, and sees

  3. Third Person: Objective The narrator is not a character in the story Third person pronouns such as he, she, it, its, they, and them are used in the story The narrator is an observer who can only tell what is said and done The narrator cannot see into the minds of any of the characters We can only fond out what the characters say and do

Third Person Limited: The narrator is not a character in the story Third person pronouns such as he, she, it, its, they, and them are used in the story The narrator tells the story from the vantage point of one character The narrator can see into this character’s mind, but not any of the others We find out only what this character does, knows, thinks, and sees

  7. The POV of The Road • The Road narration is third person (omniscient), but it’s a third person that likes to shift into the head of one character. It often sounds like The Man is narrating the novel, since whole paragraphs describe his thoughts, memories, and perceptions. example from the text: “He [The Man] woke in the morning and turned over in the blanket and looked down the road through the trees the the way they’d come in time to see the marchers four abreast…he put his hand on the boy’s head. Shh, he said.”

  8. The POV of The Road Continued • The first sentence of the precedent quote describes the man waking up, but then the narration clearly shifts to what The Man himself is seeing and thinking. • It doesn’t say “The Man saw the roadagents dressed in clothing of every description…” but instead it says, “Dressed in clothing of every description.” • This makes it more immediate and as a reader we forget The Man seeing all of this and simply see it through his eyes instead. • Source: http://www.shmoop.com/the-road-mccarthy/narrator-point-of-view.html
