Race to the Top (RttT)Assurance B: Standards & Assessments • Participate in professional development on the new academic content standards • Revise existing local curricula in order to align with new common core standards • By March 2014, district curricula and course pacing guides for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies will be aligned to the new standards.

  3. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • Currently ELA and Math • Sponsored by the National Governor’s Association (NGA), and Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) • Purpose: to ensure students meet the requirements of college and career readiness (CCR) • Research and evidence based • Aligned with college and work expectations • Rigorous in content AND application of knowledge • Internationally benchmarked

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) continued • Educators, researchers, content experts and national organizations (including AFT) provided feedback (colleagues from TPS involved) • Revisions were made based on feedback • Ohio adopted in June 2010 (required for RttT eligibility) • Model Curriculum adopted March 2011

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) continued • State standards NOT national standards • Written to create commonality across U.S. • Adoption was voluntary (although mandatory for states applying for the RttT grant) • Currently 44 states adopted w/ several provisional • States were permitted to add up to 15% to the CCSS to “personalize” them • Ohio chose not to add to the CCSS for monetary reasons

Two Assessment Consortia • Two Assessment consortia • (PARCC)- Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (25 states) • Drafts of the frameworks were released on August 3rd and will be available on the PARCC website for public review until August 31st can provide feedback through a survey • SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium- (31 states) • Each consortia is developing assessments which will look very different • Ohio is an Advisory State to BOTH consortia

  7. Ohio’s Revised State Standards (RSS)Science & Social Studies • Ohio adopted CCSS as part of RttT • Ohio also chose to revise the current Content Standards in Science and Social Studies • Must fully implement CCSS and RSS by 2013-2014 • Assessments implemented 2014-2015

Rolling out CCSS & RSS • Step 1: Gap Analysis between CCSS/RSS and our current content standards • Step 2: Alignment of K-2 Board adopted curriculum with CCSS and RSS as well as ODE Model Curriculum • Step 3: K-2 roll-out of the Standards 2011-2012 • Process will continue until full implementation K-12
