  1. Bonesa – Matatiele Research Project(Phase 1) Tabular Report on Current Behaviour, Consumption Habits and Attitudes vis-à-vis Electricity and Related Products

  2. Background and Objective • Bonesa have undertaken a project for the Department of Minerals and Energy to install/supply two (2) CFL’c per household unit at four tribal residential villages near Matatiele (Eastern Cape). The residential villages are Hlomendlini, Dengwane, Khoapa and Zwelitsha. The total number of household units that are electrified and in which the lamps have to be supplied is 1 200. • Research was required to to provide the requisite informational inputs as a basis for: • evaluating the success of an initiative of this nature • monitor the effect of this intervention on electricity consumption and usage patterns as well as attitudes towards CFL’s and adoption thereof. • provide benchmark data learnings for the roll out of similar projects into other areas • The envisaged programme is to conduct the research in three Phases as follows: • Phase 1 (pre-testing stage) to establish existing consumption patterns of electricity. Findings from this Phase will also be used to refine the instrument to be used in Phase 2 • Pase 2 (post-implementation stage after the supply/installation of the lamps) to establish and record all activities pertaining to consumption and usage patterns for each household unit • Phase 3 (post-testing) to obtain an evaluation of the initiative from key stakeholders • This being a community empowerment initiative, local interviewers were selected and brought into the research process. Africa Now provided the selected interviewers the requisite skills training and supervision. • This report covers Phase 1 of the research programme

  3. Research Approach Methodology • A questionnaire survey was used • Individual interviews were conducted with household members who were involved in the purchasing of electricity Sample and Extent • 200 households participated in this ‘pre-testing’ stage of the research • The households were selected from three villages viz. Dengwane, Khoapa and Zwelitsha. • The fourth village, Hlomendlini, was excluded from Phase 1 research since the distribution of CFL,s had already taken place
