  2. Today’s workshop By the end of this workshop, you will • Have your own Zotero account • Add references to Zotero • Create a Zotero bibliography • Find books and book chapters

  3. Zotero! • “Citation management tool” • Bibliographic time saver • With a few clicks, you will generate a 1st draft of your bibliography

  5. Step 1: download & install • Load Firefox • Start > Firefox • Zotero.org

  6. Step 2: Start adding references • Library Search catalogue tab: What objects mean • Click on first record • Click on Book icon in location bar

  7. Meanwhile, look down

  8. Zotero library

  9. Practice time! • Do some searches in the Library Catalogue • Add them to your Library

  10. Create a bibliography • Highlight titles • Right click on section • Choose: Create Bibliography from Selected Sources • Choose style (APA? MLA?) • Copy to clipboard • Open MS-Word • Paste

  11. Get organized! • Library: contains every citation you capture • Folders: Organized by subject, assignment, etc. • Click folder on far left: “New Collection” • Name it • Drag & drop to collection

  19. Finding books: Why? • Comprehensive accounts of research or scholarship • Broader historical perspective • More complete information (causes, effects, long-term consequences, fuller conclusions, etc.)

  20. Finding books/chapters Method 1: keyword searching in catalogue Eg “bicycle*”: 591results Narrow: add term “identity”

  21. Catalogue tips Up your relevancy: Add terms such as • “Social aspects” • “History” • “Environmental aspects” • “in popular culture” • “psychological aspects” • “in art”

  22. Subject headings • Interested in the issue of overconsumption? • Search as keyword. • See # 16: Psychology and consumer culture : the struggle for a good life in a materialistic world • Follow links at the bottom of the record

  26. 3. Don’t marry your topic • Even in this age of information, many research gaps exist • It’s possible that no scholar has published on your topic • Mine a rich vein: leave the obscure for grad school
