  1. EMMA Control System • EMMA Control System Requirements • Device Naming Convention • Hardware issues EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  2. EMMA Control System The purpose of the EMMA Control System is to provide the capability to remotely monitor and control all technical and diagnostic systems within the accelerator and to provide appropriate software to facilitate its operation and understanding. EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  3. “...to remotely monitor and control all technical and diagnostic systems within the accelerator...” • From the controls point of view EMMA is similar to a conventional accelerator in the sense that it is built up from a number of devices with well defined and understood control interfaces. • Vacuum • Power Supplies • RF • Diagnostics • Motion Control systems • Kickers EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  4. “...to remotely monitor and control all technical and diagnostic systems within the accelerator...” • A system already exists that is capable of performing this function – The ERLP control system. • All the infrastructure (network, file servers, user consoles etc.) is already in place and can easily be re-used and/or expanded to include EMMA. EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  5. “...to remotely monitor and control all technical and diagnostic systems within the accelerator...” Overview of ERLP Control System • EPICS – currently Version 3.13 • VME / VxWorks - CPU board MVME2304 (obsolete!) • Industry Pack (IP) interface modules for analogue, serial and digital I/O • In-house designed CANbus system for interlock protection • Approx. 400 devices controlled through 5 IOCs (Input/Output controllers) • User Interface – Linux PC + EDM synoptic displays EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  6. “...to provide appropriate software to facilitate its operation...” EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  7. “...to provide appropriate software to facilitate its operation and understanding.” Due to the fact that EMMA is very much an accelerator research project, considerable thought needs to be given to acquisition, archiving and analysis of machine operating parameters and diagnostic data. • EPICS Tools – Channel Archiver, Strip tool • Matlab • Excel • Bespoke applications for critical measurements We need to form a consensus on the best tools to use and specify software needs as early in the design process as possible. EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  8. Device Naming Convention It is important to establish a comprehensive and formal device naming convention as soon as possible. Formal names should always be used in: • Engineering drawings • Reports, documents and e-mails • Control system software • All other software associated with EMMA • …whenever there is a need to communicate information about physical devices within EMMA EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  9. ERLP Naming Convention DDD-TTT-CCCCC-NN Where: DDD Domain (INJ, ST1, AR1 … ) TTT Technical Area (VAC, RF, DIA … ) CCCCC Component type (IONP, VCOR, EBPM … ) NN Device identifier (01, 12, 23 … ) Examples INJ-MAG-VCOR-01 ST1-DIA-EBPM-02 AR2-VAC-IONP-01 EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  10. EMMA Naming Convention For compatibility with ERLP retain the same convention, but… Add three new domains: EMI EMMA Injection line EMR EMMA Ring EME EMMA Extraction line • Examples: • EMI-DIA-EBPM-02 • EMR-MAG-DQUAD-13 EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  11. EMMA Naming Convention Next Steps: • Issue document specifying naming convention in full • Set up a web-accessable database of devices • Start to assign names to devices and populate the database EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  12. Hardware Issues • Motorola MVME2304 CPU board used on ERLP is no longer available. Will need to identify a replacement hardware platform. This will also mean an upgrade of EPICS from 3.13 to 3.14 • Do we stick with VME/VxWorks or switch to another combination such as industrial PCs or network-enabled devices? • Rack location. Decision has been made to site racks and instrumentation on a mezannine platform above EMMA. What are the pros and cons of this decision? EMMA Design Review 28th Feb 2007

  13. Conclusions • The EMMA control system uses conventional controls technology and can easily be accommodated by extending the ERLP system. • Need to decide on the right hardware platform. • A device naming convention needs to be agreed and published as soon as possible. • Thought needs to be given to the data acquisition and application software requirements.
