  1. Maintaining a current teaching license– it’s your responsibility ORE 2009-2010 presentation

  2. Who Needs to Know? All certified staff • Teachers start out with a Standard Professional I License. During this time, ceu’s do NOT count towards license renewal. BUT--- (1) One requirement of the SP I license is to attend professional development, and (2) it is always good to document any training you have or skills acquired during these first 3 years. • During the 4th year, a teacher MAY become eligible for a Standard Professional II License. This is when the teacher must begin to earn renewal credits. A renewal cycle is 5 years.

  3. State Requirements • Reading – 3 credit units (For teachers teaching K-8—includes resource, not media, guidance, etc) • Academic or Subject– 3 credit units (This does not apply to Media, Counselor, Principal, Assistant Principal. It DOES apply to art, music, dance, drama, physical education. • General – Remaining balance (minus the county requirement)

  4. County Requirement • Craven County Schools requires 1 technology credit unit during the 5 year cycle. These credits must be approved by Chris Thornton and sent in by your staff development coordinator for prior approval.

  5. FREEBIE! • For each year taught, the teacher earns 1 CEU! What a great way to recognize all those overtime hours, grading papers on weekends, …..!

  6. How do I know it’s my renewal year? Human Resource Services sends 2 letters during the renewal year: Letter 1—Sent out in the fall of the renewal year Letter 2--- Sent out around February stating what you must have by June

  7. Track your staff development credits: When : Yearly NCDPI and CCS maintain that it is YOUR responsibility to satisfy your license renewal requirements. Failure to do so could mean that you are ineligible for employment. Where: Website—http://10.166.3.254/

  8. Have a “backup” file: You never know when you will be challenged to verify your CEU’s. This is why I ask that you always forward me your emails that show CEU confirmation. It is also a good practice to copy all CEU certificates (papers generally received from attending conferences/ events) and let me store in your file. Keep your own records as well (emails, papers, etc.)

  9. There are always exceptions: If you are a • School counselor • Media coordinator • Technology facilitator • School psychologist • Principal • Assistant Principal then you do NOT need reading or academic Credits!

  10. Reminders Quote from NCDPI licensure section: “Each license holder is responsible for knowing and satisfying license renewal requirements. Failure to renew your North Carolina Standard Professional 2 license makes one ineligible for employment .” It is YOUR responsibility to renew your license before the date of expiration. If you are NOT receiving CEU confirmations from the SEA System, there may be an error. It is YOUR responsibility to be sure that you receive credit for professional development that you attend. Also, check the website frequently to see that you are earning credits in each category applicable to your license. *If you don’t complete the Sea System surveys, the credits are not posted.*
