  2. Who was Shaka? • Was born in Natal, South Africa in 1785 • He was a great warrior and one of the best war leaders of his time.

What made him such a great soldier and leader? • Shaka was very tough on his soldiers, but never expected them to do anything he couldn’t do himself. • His warriors were called ‘Amabutho’ and were famous. • He forced them to march up to 70km per day carrying weapons and surviving on what they could find in the bush. • Shaka soon discovered that the sandals worn by Zulu men slowed them down. So he made them march, run and fight on bare feet. • He changed the traditional "assegai" (a throwing spear) to a shorter stabbing spear. • He also gave his warriors a larger shield which covered most of the soldier's body. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_hS_DKab8I

  6. What made him such a great soldier and leader? • Perhaps the most successful of Shaka's great battle plans was the fighting plan he figured out.
