  1. Matthew Stobb 2011 Summer Intern Regulatory and Economic Studies August 12th, 2011

  2. A little about me… Matt Stobb From Cedar Rapids, Iowa An undergraduate student at Iowa State University in the department of Electrical Engineering Iowa State Career Fair for Engineers introduced me to MISO

  3. Resource Forecasting

  4. MISO 7-Step Transmission Planning

  5. My Summer Project • Developing a 20-year forecast for MISO Demand Response and Energy Efficiency program potential for use in capacity expansion model (EGEAS) • Demand Response (DR) Programs • Intended to reduce the peak demand during system peak or in emergency events • Mostly used for peak shaving purposes • Energy Efficiency (EE) Programs • Reduces energy consumption by offering incentives and rebates to encourage customers to install energy efficient appliances and equipment • A consistent forecasting methodology for all the Load Serving Entities (LSEs) to input data in to Module-E Capacity Tracking Tool (MECT)

  6. Load Forecast Screen DSM Screen Supply-side Map DSM into Resource Resource Plan Optimization Electric Generation Expansion Analysis System (EGEAS)

  7. In the past, DR and EE assumptions were… • 80 MW increase every year • A percentage reduction in the growth rates • Did not consider any actual data • Small reduction in demand and energy growth rates were assumed to account for DR and EE savings • In 2010, MISO contracted with Global Energy Partners LLC (GEP) to do a system wide study • Data collection from all MISO utilities • Used actual numbers to determine program growth • The developed estimates were used in EGEAS for MTEP-11 • Data gets dated very quickly and requires an annual study for better forecasting

  8. In the Present: • MISO continues to use GEP study’s results • Using the same assumptions and data from the GEP study • Working on creating DR and EE Templates for standardized forecasting • Working on developing templates for future use • Created using a similar logic and assumptions as defined by GEP

  9. With the Templates MISO

  10. DR and EE Templates • Intended for use by stakeholders • Inputs • Participant numbers – projected growth • Annual Energy Sales – projected growth • Annual Peak Demand – projected growth • Program data • Outputs • Non-Coincident Peak (MW) • Coincident Peak (MW) • Energy Savings (MWh)

  11. In the Future… • DR and EE MECT Enhancements • MECT- Module-E Capacity Tracking Tool data enhancements • Easier access to the data • Forecasting performed using MISO templates • Model DR and EE State Mandates, instead • Mandated DR and EE is forced-in as capacity • Less detailed study

  12. Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative – Results Post Processing (GWh)

  13. 2011 – My best Summer Ever… • Demand Side Management • DR and EE, • Importance of forecasting, • EGEAS, and • Microsoft Excel • Energy Storage Workshop • Energy Storage : Concept and possibilities, and • Interaction with MISO stakeholders • General MISO Learning • Corporate culture, • Beginning studies, and • Power industry overview

  14. Thanks to… • Rao Konidena • Aditya JayamPrabhakar • David Van Beek • Ryan Westphal • Jordan Bakke • Matt Ellis • Matt Swanson • John Lawhorn • JT Smith • Ming Ni • Toni Schewe • Shannon Kahnk • Mat Gingerich • Wendy Weiler • Sadee Rozzel
