  3. Noble Gases Defined • The noble gasses are inactive or inert. Each atom has exactly the number of electrons to have a full outer shell, so these atoms almost never bond with other atoms.   5. Physical Properties • Only exist as single atoms (monatomic) • boil at low temperatures • Closed shells • As density increases, the atomic mass increases • Density Comparisons: • Helium has 1/7th the density of air • Xenon is 10x more dense than air www.douglastriggs.com/render/atoms-prev.jpg

Chemical Properties • Almost all of the noble gases are chemically inert • Helium, neon, and argon do not form known compounds • Krypton reacts with fluorine to form a colorless solid • Xenon reacts with oxygen and fluorine to form a variety of compounds http://plugins.angstraum.at/neon/neon_example.jpg
