  2. Thursday, Sept 20, 2012 • Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---You have a choice to make from six different political cartoons to respond to. • Select ONE political cartoon. • Then answer the following questions using your prior knowledge and notes from the Developed and Developing Nations Lesson Plan • A)What is the cartoonist’s main point or argument? How do you know this? • B) How does the content of the political cartoon relate to what we learned in the last lesson about Developing and Developed Nations and the causes and cycle of poverty? Explain and give examples.

  3. Thursday, Sept 20, 2012 • Class: Students will share their observations on the political cartoons and Ms. Barben will record the class responses on the Smartboard. • Students can follow and add the additional comments and ideas to the political cartoons in the lesson. Overall, what conclusions can we form at this point?

  4. Thursday, Sept 20, 2012 • Individual: For this Common Course Assessment, you will be selecting ONE country from either the Middle East or Africa to research and compare and contrast to the United States. • With this project, we will be going into the library and learning how to research and create bibliographies and how to cite.

  5. Thursday, Sept 20, 2012 • This project has three main objectives: • 1)Introduce you to the research resources available in the library. • 2) Introduce you to how to use those resources to complete research about your assigned nation. • 3) Teach you how to use that research to analyze and better understand significant statistics about that nation.

  6. Thursday, Sept 20, 2012 • Using the information from your research, you are to then create a powerpoint presentation that does the following: • 1)Analyzes basic statistics about the United States. • 2)Analyzes basic statistics about your assigned African or Middle Eastern nation. • 3)Compares/Contrasts the statistics about the United States and your assigned nation. • 4) Explains the significance of your research. DO NOT simply copy and paste information from your sources. Understand and explain each slide’s purpose. Ask yourself the questions: “What do these statistics tell me about my nation? Why is this significant?” • 5)Include parenthetical citations that allow the reader to find the source of your information.

  7. Thursday, Sept 20, 2012 • REMEMBER to keep track of all your sources while you complete your research as you will be expected to cite where you find your information using parenthetical citations. • The three main sources you will be using are the ABC-CLIO online database, the CIA-World Factbook website and the BBC website. • Shortcuts to these sites can be found on Mrs. Cavalcanto’s library wiki page. • To help you with your organization, we suggest you create a slide (or two or three) for each of the following categories. • Your presentation can contain as many slides as you feel necessary. For example, if you feel section B) “United States . . .” requires two slides, use two slides.

  8. A) Title Slide • Name of Nation • Eastern World and Civilizations 2012 • Student Name & Class Period • Nation’s Flag

  9. B) United States Statistics • This information should be used to compare/contrast where we live with your assigned nation. • Population • Population Density • Land Area • GNP per capita (may also be listed as GDP per capita) • Main Exports & Export Partners • Literacy Rate (Total percentage as well as Male & Female) • Main Ethnic Groups (include percentages) • Main Religions (include percentages) • Main Languages (include percentages) • Number of Internet Users • Type of Government • REMEMBER: THE FOLLOWING SHOULD PRESENT INFO ON YOUR ASSIGNED NATION WHILE EXPLAINING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INFORMATION. USE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNITED STATES TO ANALYZE YOUR NATION.

  10. C) Geography • General Location • Neighboring Countries • Capital City • Political Map • Major Urban Areas • Physical Map • Label Major Geographic Features • Label Major Bodies of Water • Reflection Questions: Answer BOTH questions within your Geography Slides. • How are these geographic features beneficial (or not) to the development of this nation? • How might the geography of this nation affect the daily life of an average citizen (Jobs, Diet, Housing)?

  11. D) Population • Total Population • Land Area • Population Density • Age Distribution (may also be listed as Age Structure) • Urban Population • Reflection Questions: Answer both questions within your Population Slides. • What is the relationship between the population density and urban population with regards to t-the geographic features of your nation? • Which of these population statistics surprised you the most and why?

  12. E) Government/Economy • Type of Government • Ruler/Leader • Main Exports • Main Export Partners • Reflection Questions: Select TWO of the following questions and answer them within your Government/Economy Slides. • How might the government and/or economic characteristics of your nation be beneficial (or not beneficial) to the development of your country? • What is the relationship between the geographic characteristics of your nation to its economic characteristics? Explain. • How did your nation's leader come to power? What impact (positive or negative) has their reign had on the nation? • Which nation is the dominant trading partner with your country? Why? How might this relationship affect your nation's decision making process?

  13. F) Health • Life Expectancy (Total as well as Male & Female) • Rate of Natural Increase • Total Fertility Rate • Infant Mortality Rate • You will need to seriously consider this information when evaluating your nation's comparison to the United States as well as its developmental level.

  14. G) Demographics • You may present this information using only a visual aid such as graph, chart, thematic map, etc. • Main Ethnic Groups • Main Languages • Main Religions • You will need to seriously consider this information when evaluating your nation in comparison to the United States as well as its developmental level.

  15. H) Communications • Number of Internet Users • Broadcast Media (Consider Freedoms of Press/Speech; What does “state-run” mean?) • Reflection Question: Answer this question within your Communications Slides. • Which of these communication statistics surprised you the most and why?

  16. I) Comparison to the United States • Compare and contrast your nation's characteristics with those of the United States. Choose at least THREE categories that you believe are most relevant in this process. • This can be done in a T-Chart, Similarities and Difference Sections on a slide, or in a Venn Diagram.

  17. J) Developing vs. Developed Nation • GNP (GDP) per capita • Literacy Rate (Total as well as Male & Female) • School Life Expectancy/Average Education Level (Total as well as Male & Female) • Reflection Question: Answer within your Developing vs Developed Nation Slides. • Looking at categories C through H, assess whether your nation would be labeled as developing or developed. Use evidence from class discussion/notes and your research to support this label.

  18. K) Contemporary Issue • As discussed in class, this section will ask you to dive more deeply into the research of your nation. Using the BBC Country Overviews, ABC-CLIO’s History & Contemporary Issues tabs, and the CIA World Factbook’s Transnational Issues section, complete research of ALL of the major issues occurring in your nation. Once you have a clear understanding of them all, choose one issue that you think is the most significant or surprised/bothered you the most. Make connections between your nations’ statistics and the causes/effects of your chosen issue. • Also, to fully understand your issue, you are required to find one more source beyond ABC-CLIO and the CIA website. For example, find an article or current event from CNN, The Washington Post, New York Times, Associated Press, etc. BECOME AN EXPERT ON YOUR ISSUE. Clearly present the issue in your presentation.

  19. L) Sources Slide • Throughout your presentation, you should be creating parenthetical citations to direct anyone viewing your slides to your source of information. For example, if you found your population statistics on the CIA website, it should be clearly stated on the Population Statistics slide. • On the final slide of your presentation, you should present a clear list of your sources (think bibliography or works cited page). You are required to have at least FOUR sources: • 1) ABC-CLIO Database • 2) CIA World Factbook website • 3) BBC website • 4) Source(s) of your choice

  20. M) File Sharing • When you have completed your assignment, you will be required to upload the powerpoint presentation to a file sharing website.
