  3. Rao’s Gripe • Festivus 1 Recap • A couple of things I want to say

  4. Our Best Feat so far..

  5. Balance sheet from the First Festivus • Let’s increase the general levity in the community (Rao) • Done (have you seen Jorge’s talks lately. The guy is a regular Seinfeld now?) • Let’s have double-blind reviewing (Martha) • Done • Let there be kindness & light in reviewing (Dave) • Working on it. • Let 100 birds sing (Amedeo) • Done (although they are singing in Italian and we can’t make out what they are singing about..) • Let’s stop accepting Rao’s poster papers (Craig) • Done (we are accepting them all as presentations) • Let’s work on “real world applications” (Dan & Adele) • You kidding?

  7. And this is the guy who seemed to believe that only plan graphs should relax..

  8. Balance sheet from the First Festivus • Let’s increase the general levity in the community (Rao) • Done (have you seen Jorge’s talks lately. 13. Where have all our hard problems gone? • We have too many smart humans in the field… • May be we should look for the really hard problems in each track • Toughnuts • Required concurrency • Probabilistically interesting ….but then I wonder…

  14. Can Dark Glasses help the Drunk find his lost keys?

  15. PSP Planning Multi-objective [AAAI 2004; ICAPS 2005 IJCAI 2005; IJCAI 2007] Highest net-benefit Optimization Metrics Cheapest plan Shortest plan Any (feasible) Plan Traditional Planning Full Metric- Temporal PO Metric Stochastic Classical Temporal Non-det Model Completeness Approx Underlying System Dynamics Shallow Model-lite Planning Incomplete Dynamics OR user preferences

  16. (Gently) Questioning the Assumption • The way to get more applications is to tackle more and more expressive domains • There are many scenarios where domain modeling is the biggest obstacle • Web Service Composition • Most services have very little formal models attached • Workflow management • Most workflows are provided with little information about underlying causal models • Learning to plan from demonstrations • We will have to contend with incomplete and evolving domain models.. • ..but our techniques assume complete and correct models..

  17. http://rakaposhi.eas.asu.edu/model-lite From “Any Time” to “Any Model” Planning Model-Lite Planning is Planning with incomplete models • ..“incomplete”  “not enough domain knowledge to verify correctness/optimality” • How incomplete is incomplete? • Knowing no more than I/O types? • Missing a couple of preconditions/effects or user preferences?

  18. Challenges in Realizing Model-Lite Planning • Planning support for shallow domain models • Plan creation with approximate domain models • Learning to improve completeness of domain models

  19. Challenges in Realizing Model-Lite Planning • Planning support for shallow domain models [ICAC 2005] • Plan creation with approximate domain models [IJCAI 2007, ICAPS Wkshp 2007] • Learning to improve completeness of domain models [ICAPS Wkshp 2007]

  20. From “Any Time” to “Any Model” Planning http://rakaposhi.eas.asu.edu/model-lite Summary • While model-intensive planning continues to have a place (e.g. NASA), we should also look at model-lite planning • Applications include workflows, web services, desktop automation, collaborative learning/planning • The aim is to reduce modeling burden. • Either by reducing planning support (shallow domain models) • or by increasing the plan creation cost (approximate domain models) • The challenges in each are different.. • Learning goes hand-in-hand with planning in model-lite planning scenarios.
