  2. Quick History of Basketball In 1891, James Naismith invented basketball at a YMCA center in Springfield. Naismith wanted to create a game that not only relied on strength, but required skill. So he nailed a peach basketball to a wall ten feet off the floor and instructed his students how to play. At the time, Naismith never expected his home made game to become a sport played worldwide. He just wanted to keep his students busy and active. As time passed, the game of “basket-ball” eventually became an international sport. It made its way from Springfield to Canada and the rest of the United States to the rest of the globe. Today, people from all parts of the world play basketball, whether it’s professionally or just for fun, people enjoy the game Naismith created over 100 years ago.
