  2. Early Life • Born August 7th, 1903 in Kenya • Son of English Missionaries

  3. Education • Grew up along side Kikuyu tribe • Tutored in Africa • Attended all male school in England • Cambridge University, PhD, Anthropology

  4. Personal Life • Married Mary Leakey in 1936

  5. Archeological findings • 1930’s – Finds many fossils, tools and other artifacts at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania

  6. Archeological findings • 1948 – discovers Proconsul africanus • Possible ancestor of both humans and primates • Lived approximately 23 to 14 million years ago

  7. Anthropological findings • 1959- Leakey team finds “Zinjanthropusboisei” which was later named Australopithecus boisei

  8. Archeological findings • 1964- Leakey team finds skull and hand of Homo habilis in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania

  9. Leakey’s Angels • Jane Goodall • Dian Fossey • BiruteGaldikus

  10. Later Years • Lecturer, fund raiser, writer • Died in London, October 1, 1972
