  3. Calendar Conversion Guidelines: • An institution’s semester calendar will not violate any accreditation regulations, federal guidelines, etc. • An institution’s semester calendar will facilitate the attainment of The University System of Ohio goals, including the transfer process. • A semester credit hour will mean the same throughout The University System of Ohio.

  4. Calendar Conversion Semester Credit Hour: One semester credit hour will be awarded for a minimum of 750 minutes of formalized instruction that typically requires students to work at out-of-class assignments an average of two hours for every hour of formalized instruction. The instructor bears the primary responsibility for formalized instruction, which may be delivered in a variety of modes.

  5. Calendar Conversion Semester Length Definition: Volume 3 Chapter One, “Academic Calendar & Payment Period” of the 2008-2009 Federal Student Aid Handbook defines an academic year as at least 30 weeks of instructional time. The number of weeks of instructional time is based on the period that begins on the first day of classes in the academic year and ends on the last day of classes or examinations. Semesters and trimesters are generally 14 to 17 weeks long.

  6. Calendar Conversion The ad hoc group wishes to echo the Ohio Board of Regents’ memo of February 4, 2000, defining the length of academic terms. It stresses both the need for flexibility required by new modes of instruction and scheduling and the need for consistency in transferring credit among institutions and equity in awarding subsidy. Ultimately, the responsibility for protecting the academic integrity of curricula, programs, and schedules rests upon the judgment of the chief academic officers of Ohio’s colleges and universities within The University System of Ohio.

  7. Standard Definitions of Instructional Arrangements and Guidelines for the Awarding of Academic Credit

  8. Calendar Conversion Opportunities • Course Enrichment • Improve Course Alignments for Transfer • Address the New Learning Outcomes for English and Math Transfer Module Courses and the New and Revised TAG Courses

  9. Ohio Board of Regents Guidelines for Majors and Minors New Manual for Two and Four Year Institutions Minimum Numbers Required Major - 30 Semester Hours Minor - 18 Semester Hours

  10. Ohio Board of Regents Guidelines for Majors and Minors In the existing Operating Manual for Two-Year Campus Programs which can be found on the OBR Website the following applies for a technical major: For approved Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Applied Business Degrees: A technical major should consist of 12 to 16 semester credit hours which constitute an area of specialization under the existing degree program. In addition, technical majors consisting more than 16 semester credit hours may be approved by the Board of Regents.

  11. Definition of a Transfer Module The Ohio Transfer Module contains 54-60 quarter Hours or 36-40 semester hours of course credit in: • English composition (minimum 3 semester hours) • mathematics, statistics and formal/symbolic logic (minimum of 3 semester hours) • arts/humanities (minimum of 6 semester hours) • social and behavioral sciences (minimum of 6 semester hours) • natural sciences (minimum 6 semester hours)

  12. Definition of Ohio Transfer Module Additional elective hours from among these areas make up the total hours for a completed Transfer Module. Courses for the Transfer Module should be 100- and 200- level general education courses commonly competed in the first two years of a student’s residency.

  13. Ohio Transfer Module The Transfer Module may be a subset or the complete set of a college’s or university’s general education requirements in A.A., A.S. and baccalaureate degrees. Room for flexibility within the general education requirements. Still needs to support seamless transfer.

  14. Ohio Transfer Module Guidelines Arts and Humanities • The course directly emphasizes at least one of the learning outcomes for the Transfer Module. Which of these learning outcomes are addressed and how? • Communicate effectively: All general education programs include a component for writing; many also include a component for oral communication or presentation • Evaluate arguments in a logical fashion: Competence in analysis and logical argument are explicit learning goals for most general education programs, although these skills go by a variety of names (e.g., critical thinking, analysis, logical thinking, etc.) • Employ the methods of inquiry characteristic of natural sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities: The tools for solving problems vary across disciplines; general education introduces students to methods of inquiry in several fields of study and thereby prepares students to integrate information from different disciplines • Acquire an understanding of our global and diverse culture and society • Engage in our democratic society: One of the overarching goals of general education is to prepare students to be active and informed citizens, the development of a disposition to participate in and contribute to our democracy is full of equal importance to the goal of having the skills to do so intelligently

  15. Ohio Transfer Module Guidelines • The course has the required entry level college proficiencies appropriate to the course. Entry level college proficiencies can be shown using a variety of means including placement exams, prerequisite coursework and a description of the course materials. • Course is not remedial or developmental. • Course does not cover variable content from term to term. • Course is not a special topics course. • Course is not an upper division course. • Course is not a narrowly-focused technical or pre-technical course. • Course is an introductory-level course that focuses on the study of human endeavors spanning historical periods, regions and cultures.

  16. Ohio Transfer Module Guidelines • Course is from one of the following disciplines: history of dance, art, music, theatre, film, literature, religion, philosophy, ethics or history. • Course employs the methods of inquiry characteristic of arts and humanities. • Course is not a skill developmental or a preparatory course for advanced study in a major (e.g. applied music lessons, studio art, symbolic logic, theatre skills and creative writing).

  17. OTM and TAG Course Review Process During Calendar Conversion Goals: • Maintain the Integrity of the Review Process • Process is Understandable • Process is Easy to Implement Current Progress: • Had Discussion with Faculty on September 25th • Refining Recommendations

  18. Calendar Conversion Timeline

  19. OTM and TAG Course Review Process During Calendar Conversion Broad Stroke Concepts: • Full Review and Expedited Partial Review • Data Entry Still Will Be Time Consuming Assistance: • Website • Training Sessions • Faculty Panel Assistance

  20. Compliance • Compliance is the requirement that all institutions offering a TAG major have approved matches to all OANs within the relevant TAG. Institutions must also have an approved match to any OTM courses that have learning outcomes such as College Algebra or English Composition I. • Institutions going through calendar conversion have until Fall 2012 to have their TAG and OTM course matches approved. Institutions already on semesters are encouraged to get their new TAG and OTM course matches submitted for review as soon as possible. These institutions also will have the same compliance deadline date of Fall 2012.

  21. Letter of Understanding • The Ohio Board of Regents and the institution will work together to facilitate the review of OTM and TAG course matches in the most effective and efficient manner while maintaining quality. • During the time period that institutions are going through calendar conversion, the statewide equivalency guarantees will be under redevelopment. Therefore, it is important that institutions keep focused on the student in the awarding of transfer credit and make decisions based on what is best for the student.

  22. Calendar Conversion Thanks and Appreciation are extended to Wright State University for having this Semester Summit. Through cooperation and collaboration we will be more successful in this endeavor.
