Projected climate change and its impacts on water cycle will likely to lead into higher ecological and socio-economic pressures and costs in Europe; What are the key policy challenges related to climate change impacts on water management, mitigation of risks and uncertainties? What are the current scientific outcomes and can those be taken aboard policy development? What are the key research topics that would need to be addressed at the European level in the future? Rationale & Objective

  3. Organised jointly by DG Environment, DG Research and DG Joint Research Centre; Dates: possibly 25-26 September, 2006 Venue: Brussels, Belgium (to be defined) Number of participants: 60-80 Climate Change and Water Workshop

  4. Opening plenary: General overview of climate change projections and impacts in Europe Commission’s plans/ programs (DG ENV, DG RTD, DG JRC) on climate change and water policy issues and research under the FP7 Final plenary: Overview of current national adaptation strategies of Member States – case studies; Way forward & research needs; Preliminary program (1)

  5. 4 sessions, with 5-6 invited presentations in each Climate change impacts on water cycle and resources - floods and water scarcity; Climate change impacts on water quality – nutrients, organic content, toxic compounds, ecological status and biodiversity; Economic and social impacts related to the changes of water cycle and resources; Adaptation needs of the water resources management in Europe; Preliminary programme (2)

  6. Discussion paper to Water Directors; Scientific Proceedings of the workshop; Overview of the outcome for the preparation for the climate change and water conference under the German Precidency; Potential outcomes
