  1. Dave Gilbert Why and How I ‘Flipped’ My Class

  2. Who has… • …heard of "flipping the classroom?” • …made screencasts, vodcasts, videos, etc… • …or used someone else's videos. • …flipped a lesson, a unit, a class?

  3. Flipped Traditional:

  4. Compared to last year (flipped) and the previous year (not)

  5. The Flipped Classroom is NOT: • A synonym for online videos. When most people hear about the flipped class all they think about are the videos.  It is the interaction and the meaningful learning activities that occur during the face-to-face time that is most important. • About replacing teachers with videos. • An online course. • Students working without structure. • Students spending the entire class staring at a computer screen. • Students working in isolation.

  6. The Flipped Classroom IS: • A means to INCREASE interaction and personalized contact time between students and teachers. • An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning.  • A classroom where the teacher is not the "sage on the stage", but the "guide on the side". • A blending of direct instruction with constructivist learning. • A classroom where students who are absent due to illness or extra-curricular activities such as athletics or field trips, don't get left behind. • A class where content is permanently archived for review or remediation. • A class where all students are engaged in their learning. • A place where all students can get a personalized education.

  7. Why’d I do it?

  8. Why’d I do it?

  9. Year .5 • Coworkers • Students (Q3) • Khan Academy (old) • Parents •  Pre-Calc

  10. Year 1 – Completely Flipped • Admin • Trial • DON’T MANDATE • Parent letter (on wiki) • Educate your community • 2 VERSIONS!!! • Students like YOUR videos

  11. My Model: • Chapter Packet • Video  Notes  “You Try’s” • 2 Videos • Pause, Rewind, Re-watch • Warm up/debrief • practice/activity/demo etc. • Formative EXIT QUIZ(retakeable for 100%) • Review  Mid-Chapter quiz …Summative Assessment

  12. How… • YouTube(Use it!) • screencast-o-matic(easy) • screenflow(robust) • Doceri (ipad - great for quick review videos) • educanon(haven't tried yet--looks cool) • Kutasoftware.com • Khan Academy-now vs. then • Others’ videos…

  13. What if they don’t watch the videos?! • Desks at back of the room(ego check) • Group learning • Seen it before? • Get it during warm up/debrief • **all exit quizzes are retakeable, so… • 1. they do well…good • 2. they bomb…now we know…go back do the HW, retry • Last to get individual help • Conversation/buy-in and parent support

  14. What if they don’t watch the videos?! More will than you think! Make them short and sweet and build the culture of your class!

  15. But we’re not a 1-1 school • USB drives • Mobile devices (use YouTube) • Library/Computer Lab • Use as supplement

  16. Student’s said… Why Flipped model next yr? Thing I really liked was… “it made the class feel quicker and more fun” “the teacher didnt lecture us much” “It made learning new concepts easier” “Watching the videos at home helped, because then there was more one-on-one time with the teacher in class is the material was not understood.” “I could review a lesson I felt that I didn't understand as well as many times as I wanted. I could pause the video to think.” “because then I can ask my teachers the questions I have rather than waiting until I get home and have no idea what I was doing” “It's a lot easier.” “I am able to get extra help in class, and more practice.” “because i can go back and re-learn a lesson i did not get the first time.” “Simple, easy, if i miss a day, i can easily catch up, or re watch a video i did not get, instead of asking for extra help”
