  8. Poland is northeastern Europe’s largest and most populous country! • Poland was divided among its neighbors in the 1700, and regained its independence shortly after WW1. However, after WWII the Soviet Union formed a communist government to rule the country. • In 1989 the communist government allowed free elections. Many businesses are now owned by people, many in their local communities. • Strengthened ties with Western countries… Joined NATO in 1999. • Warsaw is the capital of Polish life and the area has over 2 millions people, located on the Vistula river in central Poland.
