  3. Minority Groups • Treated unequally by dominant group • Physical or cultural traits held in low esteem by dominant group • Feel strong group solidarity • Membership by birth • Marry within the group What are some minority groups??

  4. Objectives of Minority Groups • Pluralism – live peacefully with dominant group • Assimilation – sharing culture with dominant group • Secession – cultural and political independence • Militancy – want to overtake dominant group

  5. Objectives of Dominant Group • Pluralism – encourage differences • Assimilation – absorb the minority • Segregation – keep minority “in its place” • Internal Colonialism – follows segregation • Population Transfer – minority forced to leave • Genocide - extermination

  6. Melting Pot or Salad Bowl? • Melting Pot – try to “melt” new European cultures into one big American culture Salad Bowl – mixing all the different cultures together to create an American culture

  7. IQ or Standardized Testing • Biased towards white, middle to upper class • Ex: Marathon: Runner • Regatta:Oarsman • Ex: Escalators

  8. Discrimination • Hate speech • Stereotypes • Labeling • Hate groups • All passed on to next generations! • Reverse discrimination – works both ways!
