  1. Laying Aside Every Weight That Ensnares Hebrews 12:1-2

Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  3. Word “Weight” (ogkoV) • Word refers to encumbrance or burden • That which hinders the runner • Not just some weights, but every (panta) weight & sin • Reason: they “beset us” from effort needed in running the race

  4. What Weights Should We Lay Aside In Our Lives?

  5. Lust & Sin Must Be Laid Aside • All sin separates us from God • Isaiah 59:1-2 • Romans 6:23 • Christians must forsake sin • Ephesians 4:20-22 • 1 Peter 2:11 • Lust & sin are at war against soul (Galatians 5:16-17)

  6. Must Lay Aside Materialism • Setting heart on riches turns our attention away from God • 1 Timothy 6:6-10 • 1 Timothy 6:17-19 • Luke12:13-21 • Instead, must set our focus on that of first importance • Matthew 6:19-21, 33

Must Lay Aside Distractions from Our Priorities • God has provided pleasures to rightly enjoy • Ecclesiastes 3:9-13 • Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 • Ecclesiastes 9:9 • However, that enjoyment has limits • Matthew 6:24; Luke 6:13f • James 1:17-18  Deuteronomy 26:1-2 • Our focus & emphasis must be on spiritual
