  1. Be Strong in the Grace that is in Christ Jesus2 Timothy 2:1You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus

  2. > Be strong > Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus “If the exhortation had simply been ‘be strong,’ it would have been absurd indeed. You might as well tell a snail to be quick or a horse to fly as to tell a weak man to be strong or a shy man to be brave. But Paul’s calling Timothy to fortitude is Christian and not a stoical exhortation. Timothy was not to be strong in himself. He was not just to grit his teeth and clench his fists and set his jaw. No, he was, as the Greek literally means, to be strengthened with the grace that is in Christ Jesus, to find his resources for Christian service not in his own nature but in the grace of Jesus Christ.” John Stott

  3. > Be strong > Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus What is grace? The unmerited favor of God, made known through Jesus Christ, and expressed supremely in the redemption and full forgiveness of sinners through faith in Jesus Christ. Manser, M. H. (1999). Zondervan Dictionary of Bible Themes.

  4. > Be strong > Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus What is grace? John 1:16–17 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Rom 5:15But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

  5. > Be strong > Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus Christ has grace without measure in himself, but he hath not retained it for himself. As the reservoir empties itself into the pipes, so hath Christ emptied out his grace for his people. “And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace (Jn 1:16)”. He seems only to have in order to dispense to us. He stands like the fountain, always flowing, but only running in order to supply the empty pitchers and the thirsty lips which draw nigh unto it. Like a tree, he bears sweet fruit, not to hang on branches, but to be gathered by those who need. Grace, whether its work be to pardon, to cleanse, to preserve, to strengthen, to enlighten, to quicken, or to restore, is ever to be had from him freely and without price; nor is there one form of the work of grace which he has not bestowed upon his people. Spurgeon, C. H. (2006). Morning and evening : Daily readings

  6. > Be strong > Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus The grace that is in Christ Jesus has been given to you, is to abide in you, and is to flow through you.

  7. God’s grace: 1) Saves 2) Sanctifies 3) Sustains 4) Enables

  8. 1) SAVING GRACE > We are justified by grace (Rom 3:23) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

  9. 1) SAVING GRACE > We are justified by grace (Rom 3:23) > We are saved by grace (Eph 2:4-5, 8-10) Eph 2:4-5But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— Eph 2:8-10For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

  10. 1) SAVING GRACE > We are justified by grace (Rom 3:23) > We are saved by grace (Eph 2:4-5, 8-10) > We are standing in grace (Rom 5:2) Rom 5:2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

  11. 2) SANCTIFYING GRACE > Grow in grace and knowledge (2 Pet 3:18) 2 Pet 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

  12. 2) SANCTIFYING GRACE > Grow in grace and knowledge (2 Pet 3:18) > Experience grace through humility (James 4:6; 1 Pet 5:5) James 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Pet 5:5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

  13. 2) SANCTIFYING GRACE > Grow in grace and knowledge (2 Pet 3:18) > Experience grace through humility (James 4:6; 1 Pet 5:5) > The God of all grace will complete what His grace has begun (1 Pet 5:10-11) 1 Pet 5:10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, an establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

  14. 2) SANCTIFYING GRACE > Grow in grace and knowledge (2 Pet 3:18) > Experience grace through humility (James 4:6; 1 Pet 5:5) > The God of all grace will complete what His grace has begun (1 Pet 5:10-11) 1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

  15. 3) SUSTAINING GRACE > His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:8-10) 2 Cor12:8-10Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  16. 3) SUSTAINING GRACE > His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:8-10) "Every believer must learn that human weakness and divine grace go hand in hand together," Philip E. Hughes

  17. 3) SUSTAINING GRACE > His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:8-10) What is the purpose of such weakness? > God’s purpose to humble you. > God’s purpose to glorify Jesus.

  18. 3) SUSTAINING GRACE > His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:8-10) > Pray for grace Heb 4:14-16Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  19. 3) SUSTAINING GRACE > His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:8-10) > Pray for grace 2 Thess1:11-12To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  20. 4) ENABLING GRACE - Grace bent outward > To serve Believers are enabled to serve Jesus Christ by his grace

  21. 4) ENABLING GRACE - Grace bent outward > To serve 1 Cor 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 1 Pet:4:10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: Rom 12:6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them:

  22. 4) ENABLING GRACE - Grace bent outward > To serve > To sacrifice God’s grace is seen in Christian character, especially in generosity 2 Cor8:6-7 Referring to a collection being taken up for the poor Christians in Jerusalem.

  23. 4) ENABLING GRACE - Grace bent outward > To serve > To sacrifice God’s grace is seen in Christian character, especially in generosity 2 Cor9:12-15For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! > To speak Col 4:6 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

  24. 4) ENABLING GRACE - Grace bent outward > To serve > To sacrifice > To speak Col 4:6Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
