  1. His Disciples Part 2 Cost and Character Traits

  2. The Intent: • For us to better understand what Jesus is talking about when he speaks of being his disciple.

  3. Why This Topic? • It is a main topic in the NT (284 times in NIV only 2 OT – begins in Matthew ends in Acts). • Our understanding and application of being a disciple impacts our faith and our evangelism as well as the longevity of our faith. • It matters what we believe as a group not just as individuals since it is a process that is supported through community.

  4. Last Week: • We looked at the cultural context of the concept and introspection of how we are being disciples of Jesus.

  5. 6 Questions: • Who taught you about being a disciple of Jesus, the cost of being His disciple, and about the need and process of making disciples? • Who are you introducing to Jesus? • How does your understanding of being a disciple show up in your daily life? • How closely are you following Jesus and how does he lead you? • How much scripture do you have memorized? • Would you say you have been more informed by Jesus or transformed by Him?

  6. Background: • Western World View of Education. • Education is about information. • Eastern View of Education. • Education was about transformation.

  7. Stages of Jewish Education: • BeitSefer – 6 to 10 years old. • House of the Book. • Memorize the Torah – First 5 Books! • Beit Talmud – 10-14 years old. • House of Learning. • Memorize the whole OT. • Art of question and answer Lk 2:46 • Learned by “remez” – Hint.

  8. Stages of Jewish Education: • Beit Midrash – 15 plus until the death of the Rabbi. • House of Study. • He would seek a Rabbi and ask to be his disciple. • He would have to pass the test. • To take his yoke was to take the rabbi’s teaching, philosophy, and interpretation of Scripture. • Wait to hear “Lech Acharai” Come, follow me. • He would leave everything and work at becoming just like his Rabbi.

  9. The Blessing: • “May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi.” • “May you follow him so closely that the dust of his sandals covers you.”

  10. Luke 9:23-26 Page 1609 • Lk 9:23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? 26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

  11. Luke 14:25-35 Page 1623 • Lk 14:25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

  12. Luke 14:25-35 Page 1623 • Lk14:28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’

  13. Luke 14:25-35 Page 1623 • Lk14:31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

  14. Luke 14:25-35 Page 1623 • Lk 14:34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. • “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

  15. Counting the Cost • What has, and does, it cost you to follow Jesus? • How does understanding the concept of being a disciple help you when the cost gets high? • What keeps you from giving up when the cost is high? • How can a reminder of the blessings help you be a more committed disciple? • Who could you help get back on track?

  16. How Will Others Know? • John 8:31-32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

  17. John 13:34-35 • John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” • John 15:8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselvesto be my disciples.

  18. How Do They Know? • How do people know that you are a disciple? • What do they make comments about? • How do you best reflect Jesus and his character?

  19. Answering the Call • Discipleship is a call to be with, know, and enjoy the Master. • He demands exclusive, complete, and unflinching obedience to Himself. • Jesus calls us to himself and calls us to an absolute commitment to him. • Jesus’ call to discipleship is a call to Christlikeness. • His call to you was a call of transformation not just information.

  20. Taking It Home: • How has a look at the background been helpful to you? • How are you becoming more like Jesus in your thoughts, priorities, and actions? • What helps you follow Jesus closely and what pulls you away?

  21. Next Week: • We begin looking at living purposeful lives dedicated to Discipleship, Worship, Ministry, Evangelism, and Fellowship.
