  2. Who Will Be Involved? • Germanic States, Sweden, and France vs. Spain, Austria, and Holy Roman Empire Where are they located? Open Book to page 170 please.

  3. Thirty Years’ War • Conflict over religion and territory and for power among European ruling families • Began when Ferdinand II (ruler of Bohemia and in Hapsburg Family) closed Protestant churches. Several German Protestant princes challenged their Catholic emperor

  4. Thirty Year’s War War lasted from 1618-1648 Two Religions involved were Protestants and Catholics War divided into two main phases: Hapsburg Triumphs and Defeats

  5. Hapsburg Triumphs • Led by Protestant Princes from Austria and Spain • Ferdinand II paid soldiers by allowing them to plunder, or rob, German villages

  6. Hapsburg Defeats • Cardinal Richelieu (Leader before King Louis XIV) helped push back the Hapsburg Army out of Germany • He sent troops because he did not want other rulers to be as powerful as France

  7. Peace of Westphalia • Ended the War and introduced a new peace negotiation whereby all participants meet to settle disputes and terms of peace • This is the first motion of modern politics and marked a beginning of a modern state system

  8. Maria Theresa • She ruled the Austrian Empire and belonged to the Hapsburg Family • Her effect on nobility was that she decreased their power and limited the amount of labor nobles could force peasants to do

  9. Frederick The Great • He ruled Prussia • He felt that a ruler should treat his people like a father figure

  10. Seven Years’ War • When Frederick attacked Saxony, an ally of Austria, every European power became involved. First time Russia is involved • France got involved to preserve colonies • The British became the real victors because they gained economic domination of India
