  3. 5 Characteristics of a chemical change Change in temperature. Light is produced. Change in color. Gasis produced. New substance is formed.

  4. Types of Chemical Reactions • Synthesis Reactions-two or more elements are combined to make a new compound. • Decomposition Reactions-two or more elements break down to make a new compounds. • Single replacement- one element replaces another element in a compound making an entirely new compound. • Double replacement- two elements in two different compounds replace each other, creating two new compounds.

  5. Energy Endothermic Reactions Exothermic Reactions • Puts off heat. • Energy is being released. • Would a bond be broken or created? • Absorbs heat. • Energy is required. • Would a bond be broken or created?

  6. Set up • Draw an arrow pointing right in the center of the page. • Fe is the black balls and O will be the white balls. • If there is more than one element in a compound, bond them together with grey connectors.

  7. Rules • You must balance this equation without writing anything down. • You may not add any new compounds to equation. • You may increase the amount of compounds that exist. • When increasing elements they must be lined up in a list or vertical like position. • When you are finished write the answer on your paper and throw up a thumbs up.

Balancing Chemical Equations • Take inventory of how many elements you have on the reactant and product side. • Select the most complicated compound in the equation. • Identify with element in that compound in the least occuring element (by how many atoms exist or by how often that element occurs in the rest of the equation). • Move to the next element in the compound • Look for common multiples. • Balance the next element in the most complicated compound.

  9. Odd awkward oxygen • Wait to balance this oxygen until last. • Multiply O2 by a number that will satisfy the odd amount of oxygen on the opposite side. • Multiply the entire equation by 2,
