  1. Professional registration and continuing professional development (CPD) for chemical engineers Libby Steele FRSC AFIChemE Head of Educational Affairs and CPD, IChemE

  2. IChemE: introduction • International membership organisation for engineering professionals in the chemical, process, biochemical and energy sectors • Around 37,000 members in ~120 countries • Staff in UK, Australia, China, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand • 90 years experience: half a century of steady growth and influence • Publishers of tce, the profession’s ‘house magazine’ and first port of call for chemical engineering recruitment advertising • Qualifying body for professional chemical engineers internationally: • Chartered Chemical Engineer - the benchmark international standard • Accredited degree courses worldwide • Accredited company training schemes (ACTS)

  3. “Advance the science and applications of chemical engineering…” • Build and sustain an active international professional community, united by a commitment to qualifications and standards that foster excellence and the delivery of benefits to society • Engage with others to promote the development, understanding and use of chemical engineering and the appreciation of its importance • Provide support and services to individuals, employers and others who further the practice and application of chemical engineering. • Enable chemical engineers to interact and communicate with each other and with other disciplines

  4. Keeping the talent pipeline flowing… Career Development Professional Development Under 15 15-18 Undergraduate Supporting undergraduates IChemE Student activities IChemE OnCampus Supporting national STEM Initiatives whynotchemeng Promoting chemical engineering as the degree choice whynotchemeng Accredited Company Training Get Chartered Progression to Fellowship Conferences, training, publications, technical networks, media and communication support, industry engagement, national and regional groups

  5. Attracting the next generation • whynotchemeng– campaign to address shortfall in chemical engineering students in UK • Ten year period – applications up 167%, intake 125% • Applications for 2013 up 26% • New departments / programmes launched and others greatly enlarged (Hull, LJMU, Westminster) • Wide international interest • Next step – persuading graduates to stay in the sector • IChemE OnCampus– linkage with universities, raising the profile of the profession and of process industry employers • Range of collaborations across the STEM community internationally – with scope for more

  6. Attracting the next generation

  7. Our membership structure supports engineers’ professional advancement FIChemE Sustained contribution and considerable achievements within their field of expertise. Important & responsible position in chemical engineering for typically >5 years. MIChemE Internationally recognised benchmark of competence. Typically >4 years experience in a responsible position within chemical engineering. Members are educated to an internationally recognised standard. AMIChemE Generally young professionals working in chemical engineering or a closely related field Affiliate Member Interested in chemical, biochemical or process engineering wishing to benefit from IChemE membership and become part of our global community

  8. Professional development • Appraising and accrediting graduate training in ~ 50 companies worldwide • Promoting professional engineering registration at technician, Incorporated and Chartered levels RSciTech/EngTech, RSci/IEng, CSci/CEng • Record of steady growth in registrant numbers, bucking the trend • Supporting CPD (online recording for CPD imminent) • Recognising excellence through awards and prizes • Providing opportunities to network and communicate • Offering training programmes and event participation – physical and online

  9. Support for skills development • Support and mentoring for engineers, from recent graduates through to senior professionals • Accreditation of Company Training Schemes (ACTS) • Recognising firms that follow good practice as IChemE Corporate Partners – giving advantage in recruitment and retention • Training and CPD programmes, both in-company and open access • Conversion programmes for chemists and others • Advising companies on developing and utilising process engineering expertise • External linkage: • Working with universities • Special Interest Groups (22) - bringing together industry, academia etc • Regional branches and member groups • Conference and event programmes

  10. Developing an IChemE Professional Learning Community (PLC) • bring under one ‘umbrella’ the offerings of the IChemE to enable the profession to have access to the best-in-class professional support

  11. IChemE – a global, gold standard, Professional Learning Community

  12. Professional Process Safety Engineer • New qualification designed for engineers with specialist competence in process safety • Similar rigour and assessment process to Chartered Engineer • One press release and tce article only, yet: • Approaching 250 expressions of interest • Truly global response • Offers of support for volunteering and/or ‘guinea pig’ trial • Scale, spread and quality of response suggests major scope to expand professional engineering registration

  13. The profession’s response • ‘Very excited to learn about new professional registration for senior process safety practitioners’ Safety Engineer - Chevron UK • ‘I would very much like to add this certification…process safety comes first’ Global Risk Lead - Syngenta USA • ‘I saw the news release of Process Safety accreditation with IChemE and am thrilled hearing this news’ Senior Process Safety Engineer - ConocoPhillips Australia • ‘I would like to express gratitude to IChemE for developing the qualification’ Process Safety Engineer - BP Azerbaijan • ‘I run a team of 8 engineers and will be encouraging all to apply’ Manager Risk & Safety - Willis Ltd UK • ‘Several colleagues are keen to pursue this, as their work in Safety Engineering has not allowed them to qualify as CEng in their original disciplines’ MD -Vanguard Solutions Australia

  14. Advocacy and engagement • Investment in engineering – e.g. university funding • International mobility and migration • For industry • For academic institutions and researchers • Consultation and representation on policy issues • Seeking to build common cause internationally and across the engineering community • ‘Forward look’ for the profession – Chemical Engineering Matters

  15. Paths to membership • Anyone can join IChemE immediately as an Affiliate member at www.icheme.org and gain member benefits • Our principle is to encourage membership into the highest grade of membership based upon assessment against criteria (e.g. graduate chemical engineers should join as Associate members) • Technician Member status provides EngTech / RSciTech registration • Individuals attain Chartered Chemical Engineer status after successful peer review and subsequent election to Chartered Member grade. See www.getchartered.com • Senior Chartered Chemical Engineer professionals with significant responsibility can be elected to Fellow with support of referees. • The new Associate Fellow grade recognises senior professionals in other disciplines who are linked to chemical engineering and the process industries
