  4. Overview • Lords prayer is the summary of the whole gospel • The Lord’s prayer is the basic prayer of the Christian life • Praying the our Father should help us to want to become like God and foster in us a humble & trusting heart.

  5. Overview (Handout) • In the Our Father, the object of the 1st three petitions is the Glory of the Father: sanctification of his name, the coming of the kingdom, and the fulfillment of his will. The other four petitions present our wants to God. They ask that our lives be nourished, healed of sin, & made victorious in the struggle of good over evil.

  6. Scripture • Luke 11:2-4 • Mt 6:9-13

  7. Different Lord’s Prayer • Some of the earliest copies of the Gospels added the doxology to the Lord’s prayer in Mt.,chapter 6, and other copies did not. It was not included in Catholic bibles in the fourth century when Jerome translated the NT from Greek into Latin because the translation he used did not include it. The manuscript used in the 16th century to translate the King James version included the doxology, which is why many Protestant bibles include it.

  8. What is the Lord’s Prayer?

  9. Jesus’ response to the disciples request to “ teach us to pray”. Lk.11:1

  10. Catechism clip CCC 2763 – The Lord’s prayer is the most perfect of prayers CCC 2768- The prayer is rooted in liturgical prayer. Not “my” Father but “our” Father.

  11. 1st Reflection The Lord’s Prayer is a summary of the whole gospel. When we pray it, we echo the very words of Jesus. How might you echo the words of Jesus in your family, at your place of work?

  12. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Matthew 6:9-10a

  13. CCC 2780 – Invoke God because he has been revealed to us by Jesus CCC 2787 – We are His people he is our God. CCC 2796 – When the Church prays “our Father”we profess we are the people of God Catechism clip

  14. How does being part of the church help you to see God?

  15. What does the world and its magnificence teach you about God?

  16. 2nd Reflection We pray that God’s will be done on earth as in heaven. What does this mean?

  17. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:10b-11

  18. 3rd Reflection In the end, we Christians are all united by the Lord’s Prayer. We share it with all other members of the church.

  19. CCC 2791 –In spite of the divisions among Christians, this prayer to “our” Father remains our common patrimony and an urgent summons for all the baptized.

  20. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:12-13

  21. Catechism clip • CCC 2840 – This outpouring of mercy cannot penetrate our hearts as long as we have not forgiven those who have trespassed against us. • CCC 2843 – the love that loves to the end, becomes a living reality

  22. Catechism clip • CCC 2844 – Christian prayer extends to the forgiveness of enemies. Forgiveness bears witness that, in our world, love is stronger than sin • CCC 2845 – There is no limit or measure to this essentially divine forgiveness.

  23. We Christians are not “people of the book.” We are people of the Word. What is the difference?

  24. Summary • New appreciation for prayer • Sense of the seven petitions • Lead us to our celebration of the Eucharist
