    2. A/ Situation de la Guyane en ce début des années 1820 + un vaste territoire mal défini dans ses frontières :

    8. + un territoire vide de population : Le baron Laussat indique pour 1822 : - 997 blancs répartis en 249 familles ; - 1620 gens de couleur (libres) pour 404 familles, soit un total de 2617 pour 654 familles ; - esclaves : chiffres variant entre 13 000 en 1819 et 19 000 en 1828. + un système de production archaïque et souffreteux, reposant sur un petit nombre d’habitations ayant le plus grand mal à dégager des profits. Laussat, « On n’y trouve pas 400 véritables propriétaires grands ou petits »  Sur les 50 habitants notables, « il n’y en a pas 12 qui aient fait des études ».
