Permeability • Permeable– Allows any substance to pass through • Impermeable- does not allow any substance to pass through • Selectively permeable- Some substances make it through others get stopped • With a partner discuss which type of permeability will most likely be experienced in your cells. Use an example to explain why you are confident in your choice.

Cells and Permeability • Cells are SELECTIVLY PERMEABLE • Its important that they don’t just let anything get access to the organelles or your DNA • What sorts of things shouldn’t be allowed into your cells? • Viruses, bacteria or other things that make you sick • Ions- charged particles can damage cells • What sort of things should your cells allow inside? • Water • Food molecules (proteins, lipids and carbohydrates) • Salts • Vitamins and Minerals

  5. Cell membrane • The cell membrane is the organelle that allows the cell to be SELECTIVLY PERMEABLE • The cell membrane is called the PHOSPHOLIPID BILAYER

Molecular Movement • You will be divided up into groups and given a quote. • With your group discuss the meaning of the words in the quote. • Annotatethe quote on the paper, write down any questions you have about words or meaning. • Find the quote in your text and read the paragraph that it’s found in to gain context. • Write a Summary of what your group thinks your quote means on the paper with your quote.

  12. Gallery walk • Glue the small sheet with all of the quotes onto pg. 46 of your notebook, in the corner against the binding. • Walk around the room and look at what other groups said about their quotes. • Summarize the quote in your notebook on pg. 46

  18. Osmosis • Osmosis is a type of diffusion. • WATER is the particle that moves in osmosis. ONLY SOLVENT MOVES • Water moves to equal out the CONCENTRATION of SOLUTE Water moves into the cell

  23. Tomorrow you will submerge a egg into a 20%, 40%,60%, 80% and 100% solution of corn syrup, as well as pure water. • Predict what will happen to the mass of each egg in each solution. (6 sentences) • Ex: The egg in the water will gain mass because….. • Note: start with the pure water and 100% corn syrup predictions. You should be able to figure those out…

In your lab groups… • LABEL the cups • Group initials or group number • Type of solution going in the cup • Initial Mass of the egg in the cup (filled in later) • Prepare your three solutions using the BEAKERS and pour them into their corresponding labeled cup. LOOK AT YOUR GROUPS SIGN FOR YOUR ASSIGNED SOLUTIONS • Get three eggs for your group. • Record the initial mass for each egg both on the data table AND on the cup it goes in. • Place your eggs in the back of the room as directed.

  29. With you lab group… • Carefully go to the back and collect your cup. DO NOT DISTURB OTHER EXPERIMENTS! • GENTLY remove the egg from the cup and rinse it off under running water. x3 • Record the final mass of your eggs on your data table. • Carefully place the eggs in the trash can. DO NOT POP THEM! • Clean the cups with soap and water and remove the tape • Stack clean cups in the back by the sinks

Graph Set up… • PG. 52 • This will be a BAR GRAPH • Y-axis= dependent variable & X-axis = Independent variable • Y-axis = Mass of the egg (grams) • X-axis = Different solutions • y-axis number intervals? 5, 10, 15? • ALWAYS START AT 0….NO EXCEPTIONS…..EVER • You will have 2 bars for each solution one bar for initial mass and one bar for final mass
