Leadership And Strategic Thinking Expected Results • Strategic Thinking • Leading to responsible and effective leadership • Spirit of voluntary service Historical Spirit of Voluntarism • Concept not new in Ghana • It was basis of community development • Communities, towns, and villages had grown through self-help • Asafo companies- mainly youth constituted the vanguard group for community • Self help • Protection of life and property • Armies against external attack. Leadership And Strategic Thinking Effect of Political, economic, social and technological changes (globalization) On voluntary Service • Gradual whittling away of spirit of voluntary Service, particularly among youth. • Demand for financial and physical rewards for otherwise voluntary • youth services offered • Disinterestedness in voluntary work for development and peace • Break up of traditional family system • Foreign influences on culture To reverse the trend: • Develop strategic thinking and Leadership among youth • Instil these as essential tools for promoting voluntary service • among youth UNV/GLOBAL CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP Tim Acquah-Hayford

Leadership And Strategic Thinking Leadership The Leader creates an environment in which those he leads operates • The environment is the organization • Leaders talk to each other and work in the organization • They also talk to outsiders, customers, suppliers, and government • The leader does strategic thinking: • He makes the choices • Demands commitments • Builds capacity • The leader provides a clear view of his vision of where the organization • is going, the expected results, the conducts of the people, states priority, • States the way forward. • The leadership efforts rest on strategic thinking- a critical leadership tool UNV/GLOBAL CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP Tim Acquah-Hayford

Leadership And Strategic Thinking Differences between Manager and Leader • Leadership does not necessarily take place within a hierarchical structure • of the organization • Manager does planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of • subordinates • Leader is more concerned with communicating with, motivating, encouraging, • involving people • The two terms are often used interchangeably though. Three types of Leadership • Successful Leadership- Achieves results intended by the leader • Effective Leader- achieves group goals and functional behaviour • Attempted Leadership- an individual attempts to exert leadership in the group Leadership resides in the functions and not in a particular person. Leadership And Strategic Thinking Generally Classified into 3 main headings • Authoritarian- focus on power • Democratic-participative • Genuine Laissez- Faire- Focus of power is with group: • -leader available to help members Another Classification Style: -Tells: Leader identifies solutions for group implementation -Sells: Leader decides and persuades participation -Consults: Leader identifies problem leaves group to identify problem -Joins: Leader defines problems and limits to answer.
