VA’s Family Firearm Safety Program PROJECT CHILDSAFE Bellevue VA Clinic (Bellevue CBOC) font Patrick Smith, LPN • Firearm accidents are at an all time low, but can be lower • 39% of Children know where the guns are stored in the home • 22% of children have handled guns when adults are not present • 20% of guns used in crime are stolen • Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program whose purpose is to promote safe firearms handling and storage practices among all firearms owners through the distribution of key safety education messages and free gun locking devices (firearms safety kits). The program is supported by a U.S. Department of Justice grant (DOJ), the National Shooting Sports Foundation(NSSF), and is a component of Project Safe Neighborhoods. • VA’s Family Firearm Safety Program is coordinated through the Canandaigua NY VA, Center of Excellence , Dr. Kerry Knox, PhD, Mental Health • Program was started April 1, 2010 • CBOC locations in Bellevue, Holdredge, North Platte, Norfolk, and Shenandoah, IA • Since roll out the CBOCs have distributed 840 gun locks! • Insert actions taken • Insert actions taken • Insert action taken • Insert action taken • Insert action taken • Insert action taken • Insert action taken • Insert action taken • Insert action taken April 1 ,2010 • To continue to keep children in the home safe and reduce gun accidents nationally. • To prevent other adults or teens form shooting the gun without permission. • To reduce your civil liability if an accident occurs. • To protect the general public (remember Von Maur).
