  1. KaitlynSporleder Calories on Menus in New York City

  2. NYC • 2008 federal judge ruled that restaurants with over 15 locations must post calories on menus • Help reduce obesity • Applied to 10% • California, Oregon, and Maine with similar laws by 2009 • New Yorkers eat over 1/3 of their meals out of home • First Amendment Violation?

  3. Pros • Consumers making better choices • Restaurants will add healthier options • People are eating out more often • Most restaurant food is high in empty calories • Ex: Whopper meal at Burger King over 2,000 calories

  4. Cons • Forcing restaurants to post information • Only applies to 10% of restaurants • Consumers can go elsewhere • You can inform them but they may still make poor decisions

  5. Evidence • Transaction data from Starbucks • Calories purchased declined by 6% • Low income people in NYC vs. New Jersey • No difference in amount of purchased calories

  6. Mediation • Calories should be required • Not a First Amendment Violation • Must be on all restaurant menus not just some • It can’t hurt anyone to be informed
