  2. “Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing in Dentistry” Technology is positively changing the dynamic of the medical field. The use of CAD/CAM is just one of many ways that technology is improving the quality of treatment dental patients receive. CAD/CAM involves the use of computer technology to help design and manufacture different types of dental restorations. The program displays a 3-D image of the prepared tooth, and sends the data to a milling chamber; the dentist can then simply check the restoration for size/fit and immediately apply it to the damaged tooth. Because I am perusing the Dental field, keeping up with the latest technology greatly interests me; therefore CAD/CAM will be the topic of my project. As more and more dentists familiarize with this advanced technology, it has the potential to become the primary method of dental restorations.

  3. Implementations of CAD/CAM • Dental Restoration Uses • Crowns • Veneers • Bridges • Inlays and onlays • Orthodontic appliances • Accuracy • Up to 50micrometres • Time Efficient • Saves time and money • No chair-side adjustments • Instantly determines correct size, fit, margin alignment etc. http://www.drgandhidental.com/cadcamcrown_bridges.html

  4. Restoration Process • 1. Data Capture • Using 3-D optical systems or laser scanning • 2. CAD • “Computer-Aided Design” for the geometric design of the restoration • 3. CAM • “Computer-Aided Manufacturing” through the information generated by the computer

  5. The Future is all Digital Dentistry • “The future of dentistry is now. Waiting another 10 years to adopt or integrate these new areas of dentistry will leave you decades behind.” - Dr. Paul Davis http://www.dentalcompare.com/News/132807-Straumann-Updates-its-CARES-CAD-CAM-System-and-Opens-Up-to-New-Partners/
