  4. Chapter 12 • Function of chapter… • John has reached his breaking point • This mirrors Bernard being forcing him to visit the Reservation for humanity • John makes a final rejection of the W.S. as he reclaims his native language

John and Helmholtz are friends… • This friendship increases Bernard’s resentment and jealousy • It also brings out the worst of Bernard’s immaturity • Unfortunately, it is ultimately another example of a failed connection • R&J contains themes that are too human for Helmholtz • Meaningful relationships, marriage, and burial are too much for him to accept and understand • John’s last resort is exhausted. • MADNESS AND VIOLENCE • Helmholtz wants to find these things in the W.S. • Result = John has no worldin which he feels comfortable
