  1. HISTORY 10 Semester Exam Essay

  2. “What aspects of the development of the U.S.A. by the WWII Era allowed her to ascend to a position of world leadership? Include economic, political, social, & technological factors.”

  3. Answer in organized essay format!Your essay must demonstrate that you possess skills in the following areas: • Writing a complex thesis (“4 point thesis”) • Using supporting detail (“elaboration”) • Paraphrasing research (“using research in your own words”) • Applying vocabulary (1/body paragraph) • Ability to write in proper essay format

  4. GETTING STARTED: 1.) Choose what you wish to write about (“the aspects”) for EACH of the factors (economic, political, social, technological)! 2.) After choosing your aspects for each factor, gather your research! Go back through your book, notes, and prior knowledge. How will you explain and support each aspect? Take notes; your notes should include important facts, connections, explanations, statistics, quotes. For each aspect, be sure you can explain how/why it allowed the U.S. to ascend to a position of world leadership! 3.) You are now ready to begin writing your essay. You need an opening that contains general background information and your 4 point thesis. You need the proper number of supporting paragraphs. You need a closing/conclusion.

  5. THE OPENING PARAGRAPH: • Begin with an opening technique (question, fact, quote, anecdote, series of 1-word sentences.) • Connect opening technique to essay question. • Give your basic response to the essay question. You MUST mention each factor AND the aspect(s) you chose for each factor! (This is your 4 point thesis!) • Give who/what/when/where, but SAVE the “how” & “why” for the supporting paragraphs!

  6. Opening sample: Just what enabled the United States to ascend to a position of power in a surprisingly short period of time during the 1900s? There is no simple answer, because her ascension involves multiple factors, particularly economic, political, social, and technological factors. Economically speaking, ___ and ___ were crucial. ___ occurred around 19??, and ___ was a _(briefly describe/explain) who ___. Politically, __ & __ led to America’s position of leadership. Socially, __ & __, which were ___, were critical, and technologically, __ & __ really advanced America’s leadership role. The ___ occurred during the __ decade, and the ___ developed __. It is the combination of all of these that turned the U.S. into the super power of the world during the 20th century.

  7. Another Opening Option:

  8. Opening Reminders: • Use an opening technique, • Address/connect to essay question, • Use the actual words: economic, political, social, technological. • Give at least TWO aspects for EACH of the above factors! • Briefly explain each aspect (so that you’re not just listing & you’re “using research”), but save the “why” & “how” for later! • Your thesis is your educated opinion (your choices of aspects) re: each of the 4 factors.

  9. Supporting Paragraphs: • Write these in the same order as you put things in your opening! • Elaborate upon your aspects – explain/describe why 1 aspect helped the U.S. ascend to leadership; show how this aspect led the U.S. to a leadership position with specific facts, quotes, statistics, etc. *Do this for EACH aspect (dedicate 1 body p. to each aspect.) • Make sure EACH supporting paragraph contains at least 5-6 complete sentences! • Make sure you’ve used at least ONE vocab word correctly in EACH supporting paragraph!

  10. Closing/Concluding Paragraph • Briefly restate your thesis. • Sum everything up. • Try to leave the reader with something to really think about, ponder/wonder, do, or question. Perhaps leave the reader to reflect upon the past while also making a guess regarding what will happen in the future. • Again, go for about 5-6 sentences here.

  11. YOU DID IT!!! But… • Take the time to proofread! • Fix any incomplete sentences, spelling errors, grammar errors. • Do NOT use any casual/slang/IM language! • Does everything flow and make sense? • Do your supporting paragraphs go in the order of & actually back-up what you wrote in the opening? • Check your essay against the rubric that will be used to grade it. What do you think you earned??? If you didn’t earn a 4, why? What needs more work/improvement?

  12. Have you revised/edited???If yes…HOORAY!Now you’re done!
