Next, writing responses explaining specific memory objects to interpret the story. Also we will be discussing the story in connection to the Japanese American Internment Camps of 1942. The following day students will present their jackdaws. They will be coached to stop at certain points throughout the text in order to reflect on their thinking and add to their summative understanding of the text. The gutter in graphic novels is a wonderfully natural place to do this, so it is a concrete place to be trained to stop and think before zooming ahead throughout the text. StrategyFish Bowl Extension 1) Using the website, www.bitstrips.com, students will create a comic about life in middle school. It can be about their family, socialization, conformity, or school in general. If your school has the software, Comic Life, use that! The students can use Photo Booth to take pictures of themselves and their friends and then insert them into Comic Life to create their comic strips.
