SWE Overview Largest non-profit educational and service organization representing both collegiate and professional women in engineering and technical fields Founded in 1950 when women started to meet in small groups in NY, DC, Boston, & Philadelphia Incorporated in 1952 Over9,000professional members in 112 sections Over 11,000 collegiate members at 316 engineering colleges & universities *Based on 1999 data (approx. 2,081,000 total) **Based on 1998 data (approx. 367,000 total)

SWE Objectives Inform young women, their parents, counselors, and the general public, of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them Assist women in readying themselves for a return to active work after temporary retirement Serve as a center of information on women in engineering Encourage women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement

  5. SWE-LA Scholarship Program • Multiple award recipients • Made possible via corporate donations • Awards are typically $500 to $1500

  6. Who is Eligible? • Women enrolled in undergraduate and graduate engineering programs through Dec 2013 at: • USC, UCLA, Caltech, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly Pomona, Harvey Mudd, or Loyola Marymount. • Women considered to be re-entry students in an engineering program • Women who have been awarded other scholarships and/or previous Society of Women Engineers scholarships. NOTE: Male candidates may not apply

  7. Typical Qualifications Demonstrate high academic and problem solving abilities Show interest in professional development by: Participating in technical organizations Holding leadership positions Conducting research projects, or Pursuing STEM-related* work opportunities. Tenacious Effective communicator Example to other students both technically and socially Special consideration will be given to those with unique circumstances and financial need *Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

Tips Re-use essays from SWE National Scholarship application PDF your application, essays, transcript and submit them electronically Ask your references to email their letters of recommendation directly to the Scholarship Chair with your name in the subject line Contact the Scholarship Chair with any questions or suggestions

  10. Key Dates Application due: March 1, 2013 In-person interviews conducted in late March Notification of Award: April 19, 2013 Scholarship Awarded: May 10, 2013 At the SWE-LA Professional Development Conference/Scholarship Recognition Luncheon Check www.swela.org website for any date changes.
