  1. Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests Mateusz Sosin BE/ABP/SU RADWG, 15.11.2011

  2. Summary Load sensors under Low-Beta quadrupoles – introduction Load sensors – signal conditioner Conditioner crate – components & radiation tests Questions Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  3. Load sensors under Low-Beta quadrupoles • Monitoring and adjustment system • Monitoring alignment systems: Wire Positioning Systems – (WPS) and Hydrostatic Levelling Systems (HLS) are installed on top of the cryostat (precision of measurements of a few microns) • Motorization of the Jacks according to 5 DOF • 10 Vertical and 6 Radial Jacks per triplet • Problem of loosing articulation point detected at february 2011 !!! • Unexpected 0.8mm Q3R5 magnet jump during repositioning dangerous for installation • Reported by D.Missiaen at LMC – 02.03.2011 • Load sensor solution proposed Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  4. Load sensors under Low-Beta quadrupoles • Constraints • Very low possible space for sensor installation (ø70, h16 mm) • High load (up to 15T) • Radioactive area • Sensor • Strain gauge – force washer type sensor • Solution tested • After market study - choosed German HBM MPZ1108010 • Rad-hard qualified Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  5. Load sensors under Low-Beta quadrupoles • Configuration per one IP side: • Installation for IP1,2,5,8 L&R • Compatible with other SU instalations S.A.S.tested by A.Marin EDMS 1062166, FipADUC cards tested by R.Denz ? Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  6. Load sensors – signal conditioner • BE-ABP-SU conditioners (Analog Devices AD7730 + ’51 based) • Cheap (0.1kCHF per channel) • Suited for application • Basic DSP abilities included • AC/DC modes & cable compensation • Suitable market accesible conditioners • Expensive (0.6..1kCHF per channel) • Additional cabling needed • We have no influence for used components Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  7. Load sensors – signal conditioner • BE-ABP-SU prototype and HBM-AE301 conditioners checked at specialtest bench • Similar noise with 270m cables • High output signal stability for both conditioners • Both solutions suitable for Low-Beta weighting system application Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  8. Load sensors – signal conditioner • SOLUTION: Basing on Survey Acquisition System electronics – create load sensors conditioning crate • Use same part of electronics like in S.A.S. (FipADUC card) • Add one PCB (12 channel input stage) in place of old S.A.S. input amplifiers board FIP ADUC CARD FIP ADUC CARD CONN.TAPE CONN.TAPE S.A.S. INPUT AMPLIFIERS BOARD LOAD SENSORS 12 CHANNEL INPUT STAGE PCB • Advantages • No additional cabling between conditioner and S.A.S. • Small space in SU racks needed • No big updates at FESA/PVSS level needed Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  9. Conditioner crate – components & radiation tests • Semiconductors proposed for 12-channel input stage of conditioner crate: • 12 x AD7730 – Analog Devices, CMOS, 24-Bit Sigma-Delta, Bridge Transducer ADC for Load Cell Applications (not tested) • 12xMIC4427 – Micrel, MOSFET driver (not tested) • 1xCPLD XC95144 – Xilinx CPLD, 144 macrocells, triple mode redundancy (5V logic compatible preffered), Actel if no agreement • 1xADUC8xx – Analog Devices, ’51 based MCU with ADC & 12bit DAC (used in FipAduc, tested 100Gy) • 12xLED HLMP-1700 or HLMP-1790(tested 100Gy) • 4x rectifying diodes 50WQ03FN(tested100Gy) • 1x LM7805 – Linear voltage stabilizer (tested 100Gy) • 2x Rail-To-Rail operational amplifier (Vcc=5V ?) FIP ADUC CARD CONN.TAPE LOAD SENSORS 12 CHANNEL INPUT STAGE PCB Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  10. Conditioner crate – components & radiation tests • Equipment locations: • IP1: US15 • IP2: UA23, UA27 • IP8: UA83, UA87 • IP5: UJ56 -> after LS1 UL55 • Equipment quantity: • Each IP -> 2 crates (10 channels for sensors + 2 spares) • 8 crates in total Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011

  11. Questions ? • According to future locations of new eqipment and radiation levels– how big is risk of radiation fails in installation places? • Because of installation works urgency– is it possible to install electronics and perform the tests later? In that case: Can we treat temporarly our components locations as ‘radiation safety’ areas? • According to problems with Xilinx XC95.. CPLD family we can change it for Actel ProAsic3, but is it really necessary in this case? • ADC tests: AD7730 & future SAS generation... Load sensors conditioners – radiation tests RADWG, 15.11.2011
