  1. SWBAT… simplify algebraic expressions Agenda Warm-up (10 min) Review hw#1 (15 min) Combining like terms / practice (15 min) OYO (On Your Own) practice problems (5 min) Warm-Up: HW#2: Simplifying algebraic expressions Tues, 9/13

  2. Algebraic ExpressionsObjective: To combine like terms to simplify expressions Infinity HS Ms. Sophia Papaefthimiou

  3. Like Termsare terms with the same variable AND the same exponent. To simplify expressions with like terms, simply combine the like terms. Example #1: Simplify: 5x – 4x2 – 7x + 14x2 • Answer: 10x2 – 2x

  4. Are these like terms? 1) 13k, 22k Yes, the variables are the same. 2) 5ab, 4ba Yes, the order of the variables doesn’t matter. (Commandment #9) 3) x3y, xy3 No, the exponents are on different variables.

  5. WARNING!!!! • You calculate the answer using the sign that is to the left of the number or variable.

  6. Warm-Up: Simplify each expression 1) 5a2 + 7a Simplified 2) -4x2y + x2y – x2y + x2 -4x2y + x2 3) 3m2n + 10mn2 – 7m2n – 4mn2 + 9m -4m2n + 6mn2 + 9m 4) a + 3a – 4(9 – a) 8a – 36 5) If a triangle has sides 3x – 2, 5 – x and 2x – 5, what is the perimeter of the triangle? 4x – 2

  7. 1.) Which of the following is the simplified form of-4x + 7x ? • -4 • 3x • -3x • 4 Don’t forget the negative!

  8. 2.) Which of the following is the simplified form of 5x – 4 – 7x + 14 ? • 12x + 18 • -2x + 10 • 2x – 18 • 12x – 18

  9. 5.) y 3.) -4d – 6a2 +2d – 12a2 -18a2 – 2d 4.)

  10. OYO (On Your Own) Problems 5(z – 3) + 4z 4(y2 + 8y – 2) – y2 + y 5(3x – 7) – 6x 7(4x2 + 3x) + 2(5x2 + x) 8x + 2[5 – (x – 3)] Step 1: Distribute the -1 first (inside the brackets) Step 2: Combine the like terms inside the brackets Step 3: Distribute the 2

  11. SWBAT… simplify algebraic expressions Agenda WU (15 min) Review HW#2 (20 min) Warm-Up: If simplified, write “simplified” 1) 5a2 + 7a 2) -4x2y + x2y – x2y + x2 3) a + 3a – 4(9 – a) 4) If a triangle has sides 3x – 2, 5 – x and 2x – 5, what is the perimeter of the triangle? Wed, 9/14

  12. 1) 5a2 + 7a Simplified 2) -4x2y + x2y – x2y + x2 -4x2y + x2 3) a + 3a – 4(9 – a) 8a – 36 4) If a triangle has sides 3x – 2, 5 – x and 2x – 5, what is the perimeter of the triangle? 4x – 2 Warm-Up: Simplify each expression

  13. Answer Now Which figure below models the simplification of -4x – 5 + 7x + 7 using these tiles?

  14. Let’s review the back of the agenda before we begin the quiz.
