  5. Two economic system (main cause) • North----- capitalist economy (资本主义经济) • South----- plantations (种植园经济) The existence of the slavery system had to be eliminated for it stood in the way for the further development of the capitalist economy throughout the country.

  6. The Slavery Problem Negro slaves were first brought to America at the beginning of the 17th century to meet the needs of the laborers.   12. Fort Sumter It was the Confederates (The Southern Army) not the Union (The Northern Army) that struck the first blow. April 12,1861,at 4:30a.m.,Confederates under General Pierre opened fire with 50 cannons upon Fort Sumter.

  18. The Homestead Bill & The Emancipation Proclamation (1) Reasons of appearing During the first stage of the war from 1861 to 1862, the North was in an unfavorable condition. One important reason was that many farmer had not got enough land and all the Negroes had been still enslaved. Consequently they had not been interested in the war.

Part Ⅲ The Significance and effects of the War • The civil war was an epoch-making event(开新纪元的事件)in American history • It was a bourgeois revolution (资产阶级革命)in nature, a continuation and expansion of the War of Independence • It was a struggle of life and death between two social system, between the progressive and the backward • The abolition of slavery and the emancipation of the Negroes enabled the country to develop more rapidly in every field • It also extended its far-reaching influence (深远的意义)to the European revolution
