  2. Latvian Maritime academy • Founded in 1989 1st October. • In LMA are studying about 750 students. • There you can teach for a Captain, Mariner, Mate, Navigator, Cabinboy.

  3. The History of LMA Latvian Maritime academy was founded in 1989 as a part of Riga Technical University, but as an independent educational establishment it was founded on 8 January 1993. Latvian Maritime Academy (LMA) is the first and only marine-oriented institution of the higher education in Latvia.

  4. The first students graduated the Latvian Maritime Academy in 1994. LMA graduates have well-paid job offers and there is an increasing demand for maritime professions both on the Latvian and international markets.

  5. The quality of maritime studies at LMA is recognized at the national and international levels. It is constantly being upgraded as well. In June 2001, LMA was accredited for the whole period pf its activity, whereas the programs received accreditation for the maximum period of six years.

  6. Maritime administration of Latvia Maritime Administration of Latvia was established in 1994 as a non-profit organization on the basis of Captain General of Latvian Ports. The following units were joined: • Latvian Hydrographic Service • Search and Rescue Service • Latvian Ship Register • Latvian Seamen's Registry.

  7. History of Maritime in Latvia Krišjānis Waldemar Krišjanis Valdemārs was a writer, editor, educator, politician, folklorist and economist, the spiritual leader of the first Latvian National Awakening and the most prominent member of the Young Latvia Movement.

  9. Liepaja Maritime College The first attempt to establish a School in Liepaja were in1843. Back then it was a private school where training was only in German. In 1861 the city school district opened the Maritime School, which existed until the 1876.

  10. Already in the 1930 the school trained 133 students. In 1936 the school had close because of high unemployment, however, remained in Liepaja fisheries school. This school exited until the Second World War. Now young people began to study in Liepaja maritime College for 4 years and received a third professional-level diplomas.

  11. “Latvijas Kuģniecība” In handy or medium-sized tankers category “Latvijas kuģniecība” (JSC „Latvian Shipping Company”) is among the leading tanker owners in the world, it is also in a leading position among similar companies in Northern Europe when it comes to oil shipments. It owns 23 modern up to standard tankers with well-trained and experienced crews. In total, the commercial fleet of JSC „Latvian Shipping Company” consists of 25 tankers (2 of which belong to other ship owners).

  12. JSC„Latvian Shipping Company” is constantly expanding and shortly new medium-sized oil tankers will be added to the fleet. • Precision and cargo safety are not the only virtues of „Latvijas kuģniecība”, for many years now one of the top priorities of the company has been environmental protection.
