  2. Geography of Sparta • Located in the region of Laconia, in south eastern Peloponnese • The Evrotas river gave them fresh water • They had the non-citizens (Helots orPerioeci) do there farming for the region • The average temperature yearly is about 64 to 68 degrees F.

  3. Food Source • Did not do much farming because the Helots, or slaves did it for them • Half of the crops belonged to the aristocrats and the other half belonged to the Helots • Grew grapes, olives, figs, apples, and cherries • Made a lot of different breads because of how much wheat and barley they grew

  4. Government • Two kings that ruled jointly • Very strong military • Very weak in their farming abilities • The Assembly was made up of male citizens and made many decisions for Sparta

  5. Religion • The gods dwelled on Mount Olympus in Thessaly • Hades was considered as the god of the underworld and Zeus was the god of the heavens. Thought highly of Zeus

  6. Architecture • Three distinct types of architecture • Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian • Doric architecture predominantly used by Spartans • Doric architecture had thicker columns

  7. Social Structure • The men and boys would be soldiers • Sports such as wrestling and racing • Women mixed freely with men • Society divided into three main classes

  8. The Arts • Renowned for music and dance • Many sculptures • Bronze, ivory, and terra cotta • Poetry, music, and dance

  9. Writing • Originated from the Phoenicians • First alphabet to include vowels • Wrote fables, myths, and legends

  10. Technology • Gear, screw, rotary mills, screw press, water clock, water organ, • Found the use of steam could operate machinery • Developed surveying and mathematics

  11. Legacy • Model of discipline, conformity, militarism, and virtue • Spartan women very much like modern women • New innovations still used in modern times
