  2. Plants need 3 things in order to carry out the process of Photosynthesis • 1. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) • 2. Water (H2O) • 3. Light Energy

  3. Where does the energy on our planet come from? • The main source of energy for all life on earth is the sun. • The sun provides the plants with Light Energy that they use to carry out the process of Photosynthesis. • Plants are also known as Autotrophs

  4. What is an Autotroph? • Autotroph: Organisms that make their own food. • Example: Plants • The word auto means “Self”

  5. Heterotroph • Heterotroph: Organisms that must obtain energy from the foods they consume (eat). • Example: Animals

  6. Forms of Energy • Energy comes in many forms, including light, heat, and electricity. • It can also be stored in chemical compounds and released when you break a bond. • Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the number one form of energy for all cells.

  7. ATP • The principal chemical fuel that cells use to store and release energy is called Adenosine Triphosphate. • AKA: ATP

  8. What are ATP molecules made up of? • ATP is a nucleotide. • Remember that we talked about these when we covered Macromolecules. • A Nucleotide is made up of three parts: • 1. A Nitrogen base called Adenine • 2. A Ribose sugar • 3. 3 phosphate groups

  10. Where does the energy come from in an ATP molecule? • The energy is in the bonds holding the Phosphate molecules together!! • The 3 little phosphate groups are the key behind the ATP molecules ability to Store and Release Energy

  11. So how does the energy get out? • Energy is released from an ATP molecule when the bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate group is broken. • When you break the bond between the two phosphate groups the ATP molecule becomes Adenosine Diphosphate. • Also known as ADP.

  12. So if an ATP molecule can release energy can it also store energy? • The answer is yes! • When the cell needs to store more energy it just adds another phosphate group to the ADP molecule which becomes Adenosine Triphosphate(ATP).

  13. Photosynthesis Defined: • The process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high energy carbohydrates such as sugar and starches.

  14. Where does Photosynthesis Occur? • Inside of a chloroplast. • Thylakoids: are sac-like photosynthetic membranes. • Thylakoids are stacked on top of one another forming structures called Granum. • The space surrounding all of the granum is called theStroma
