  1. Team of Russia Presented by Kozhikhova Olga Problem №11 «Fingerprints»: Fill a glass with a liquid and hold it in your hands. If you look from above at the inner walls of the glass, you will notice that the only thing visible through the walls is a very bright and clear image of patterns on your fingertips. Study and explain this phenomenon.

  2. The observation

  3. At a close viewing

  4. The assumption • The above mentioned phenomenon is related to the reflection from the outer surface of the glass and the optical contact between the fingers and the glass walls.

  5. The optical contact 2. is achieved (with water) 3. is achieved (with oil) 1. is avoided

  6. Consequence:

  7. The initial conditions

  8. The first model. There is only air behind the glass wall

  9. The second model. There is a finger behind the glass wall

  10. The glass bottom painted black

  11. The dependence of the bottom color

  12. The role of water

  13. Final conclusion Fingertip pattern is related to: • the optical contact between the fingers and the glass wall • the total internal reflection • the diffuse reflection
