  1. An Introduction for Rising Ninth Graders to Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education (CTAE) Courses and Career Pathways at BCHSGraduating Class 2020! Presented by Dr. Leslie Clark CTAE Director Burke County School System

  2. You will be graduating Burke County High School in less than 5 years! What do you plan to do for a career? What does this have to do with what you plan to take in high school? Everything!

  3. Your dreams are important but: • Your goals should be realistic • Know your strengths • Know your weaknesses • Have a plan and a back up plan!

  4. Soon you will be registering for classes for 9th Grade! • What will you take? • How will what you take relate to what you want to do for a career at this point in your life? • What organizations will you join?

  5. There are so many careers you have been learning about! Career and Technical, Agricultural Education (CTAE) courses, offered at Burke County High School, along with specificacademic courses, can help you on the path to a successful career

Career, Technical, & Agriculture Pathways Are Offered at BCHS in the following Career Clusters Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources Business Management & Administration Finance Construction Human Services - Nutrition Education Energy Health Science Engineering and Technology (STEM) Transportation - Automotive JROTC

What is a Career Cluster? • Career Clusters are just groupings of occupations or Careers • There is something in common about these • Careers • Example: Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, lab technicians, veterinarians, • and xray technicians • These are all careers that relate to one career cluster – Health Science

  9. Each of the Career Clusters we offer at BCHS will consist of Pathways. So what is a Pathway?

  10. What is a Pathway? Pathways are made up of at least three specific courses, in a Cluster. • Example • Career Cluster: Education • Pathway: Early Childhood Care and Education • First Class all Early Childhood Education Students Take: • Early Childhood Education I (9th grade) • Then: • Early Childhood Education II (10th grade) • Early Childhood Education III (11th grade)

  11. Pathways are designed to help you: • take courses, both CTAE and academic, related to your career goals! • learn more about an area of interest to determine if this is the right career path for you! • enter college or the workforce a step ahead of the rest!

  12. Why Complete a CTAE Pathway? • Completing a Pathway will assist you in learning more about a particular career and prepare you for it while in high school • The courses will help you become more competitive after high school • Employment • Technical College • 2 or 4 year college • Military

  13. Take courses in a Cluster and Pathway closest to the type of career you think you are interested in at this point in your life! If you want to be a doctor, physical therapist, x-ray technician, phlebotomist, nurse, or in any medical field – take the first course in the Health Science Cluster. In that class you will learn about the different available pathways and the classes you will take in tenth grade and beyond.

  14. End of Pathway Assessments(EOPA) • Most Pathways consist of three courses in a specific order. • When you have taken the third class in a pathway, you are considered a “Completer” • You will take an End of the Pathway Assessment that can lead to a Certificate or Credential!

  15. How Many Classes in a Pathway Can I take? • As a Freshman, you will most likely have room in your schedule for only one course in a CTAE Pathway. • Often this course is an overview of different pathways, including some that are not currently offered at BCHS. • This course will help you determine if you want to continue in a related Pathway in that program area or change to another Program.

  17. Courses for the 2016-2017School Year! Remember! Think about the courses that may relate to your current Career Goal! All Clusters, their Pathways, and Courses are for all students - male and female!

Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources Career Cluster Careers include: • Welder, GPS Technician, Agriculture Mechanic, Equipment Technician • Department of Natural Resources, Forester, Park Ranger, Logger • Golf and sports turf or Golf Course superintendent parks and gardens, greenhouse manager, Landscape & Design, Florist • Vet. Tech., Park Ranger, Veterinarian, Animal Trainer

What do people do who work in Nutrition and Food Science? • They help people lead healthier lives through a balanced diet. • They plan food and nutrition programs and supervise the preparation and serving of meals for hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. • They help prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and by recommending dietary modifications.

  30. Why Healthcare? An estimated 3.6 millionnew health care jobs will be created by 2014, more than in any other industry. Obtain a part-time job in Healthcare while you pursue your chosen field in Healthcare by taking the Pathway!

  31. FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN THE HEALTHCARE FIELD! As a 9th grader sign up for: Introduction to Healthcare Science Careers include: Medical Records, Health Diagnosing, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Physician, Occupational Therapist, Midwife, Mental Health Nurse, Veterinarian, and many more!

You will learn about the different types of engineers and what they do! By becoming an engineer, you can help solve problems in society.

What do I need to do to decide what CTAE courses to take in 9th Grade? • Think seriously about what you may want to do as a possible career goal. • Take interest surveys seriously. • Find out which CTAE courses you should take that relate to that career! • Pay attention when advised on courses to take! • Complete your registration information carefully! • Ask questions!
