  1. Detection of AGN with the MAGIC Telescope • The VHE Sky • VHE Blazar spectrum • Observation prospects Roger Firpo (IFAE) 14th International School of Cosmic Ray Astrophysics, Erice ‘04

  2. The VHE Sky 3rd EGRET catalog (20 MeV – 30 GeV) • 271 sources • 67 AGN (Blazars) • 168 unidentified Cherenkov Telescopes (500 GeV – 10TeV) • 18 sources • 8 blazars, only 4 also in 3rd EGRET catalog MAGIC (30 GeV – 50 TeV) TeV Sky Roger Firpo, ISCRA 2004

  3. BL Lac Mrk421 The VHE Blazar spectrum The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) Two bumps Synchrotron & IC Flaring (high flux) states • Sub-day scale variability In small E range: powerlaw spectrum dN/dE~k(E/Ec)-γ • γ = photon index 1.57 > γ > 3.45 EGRET IACTs Roger Firpo, ISCRA 2004

  4. Blazar observation prospects • Naively Extrapolating EGRET spectra • Powerlaw + IC peaks + EBL absorption • Observation time to have a 5σ detection < 50hr • Ethr= 30 GeV • Flux sensitivity down to 10-11 ph cm-2 s-1 3C 273 Z = 0.158 F(E>0.1) = 15.4·10-8  = 2.58 28 Blazars (9 BL Lacs + 19 FSRQs) are expected to be detected with a significance of 5σ in less than 50h Also we’ll use X-Ray satellite data to catch flaring AGN MAGIC Simple Power law EGRET Simple Power law + IRB MeV GeV TeV Roger Firpo, ISCRA 2004

  5. MAGIC AGN Candidates Roger Firpo, ISCRA 2004

  6. SUMMARY • The AGN are a primary target for MAGIC • We extrapolated EGRET data to predict the observation time for these sources • We expect to observe at least 28 AGN with MAGIC Roger Firpo, ISCRA 2004
