  2. Election of 1932 Rep. President Herbert Hoover v. Dem. Franklin Delano Roosevelt. V. Americans blamed Hoover for the depression problems. As governor of NY, Roosevelt provided aid to depression victims. Roosevelt promised public works programs: Gov’t. funded projects to provide jobs.
  3. Landslide Victory for FDR
  4. Franklin Roosevelt’s Presidency Had a mandate: Democrats controlled the White House and the Congress. Showed his strength in his fight against polio.
  5. Presidency Continued Used fireside chats to speak to the American people. Believed it was the gov’t.’s job to directly aid its citizens. Eleanor Roosevelt changed the role of First Lady. Was her husband’s eyes & ears. Was a social activist.
  6. Roosevelt’s Policies He first addressed the banking crisis: Bank holiday: Closed all banks until their stability could be determined. Emergency Banking Act: Gave the gov’t. the power to evaluate all banks, closing some if necessary. Banks that were deemed stable were reopened. Glass-Steagall Act created the FDIC: Fed. Dep. Ins. Corp. Goal was to make people confident in banks again.
  7. FDR’s New Deal First Hundred Days were critical. Relief, recovery, and reform. Civilian Conservation Corps: Created jobs for young men.
  8. New Deal Con’t. Agricultural Adjustment Act: Gave farmers a subsidy, or gov’t. payment, to grow less crops. Securities and Exchange Commission: To serve as a watchdog over the stock markets. Tennessee Valley Authority: Built dams & other projects along the Tennessee River. Indian Reorganization Act: Recognized the tribe as a key unit of Native American culture. Limited the sale of Indian lands & provided assistance. Some Native Americans applauded it, some believed it was just the white man imposing their control again.

  10. The New Deal changed the relationship between gov’t. and the people. Increased the contact between people and gov’t. People felt comfortable asking the gov’t. for help. Critics of the New Deal and Roosevelt: Conservatives & liberals attacked the New Deal. Huey Long criticized Roosevelt for being too bank & business friendly. Father Charles Coughlin used his radio show to criticize FDR. Dr. Francis Townsend criticized FDR for not doing enough for the elderly. Helped to introduce the idea of Social Security.
  11. Other Setbacks for the New Deal The Supreme Court made some key rulings that limited some of the New Deal programs. For example it was ruled that the tax used for subsidies for farmers was unconstitutional.
