  2. IntroductionChanging the Learning Landscape Programme – a sector wide programme strategically supporting the use of technology within learning and teaching. NTU looking at Digital Practice as a core competenceHigher Education Academy offering small scale funding for projects to look at elements of this. Opportunity to combine SCALE-UP project with broader CLL project.

Embedding Learning Technologies Opportunity to employ second year students to be Digital Skills Mentors to work on SCALE-UP module and with library to help understand digital literacy needs of studentsFocus on digital skills of students needed for SCALE-UP flipped learning approach.Library keen to understand how support for digital literacy/practice could change in library.

NTU Library Aim To develop library IT/digital support services Objectives Enable students as drivers of innovative practice by using students as agents of change in the form of Digital Skills Mentors To develop staff student partnerships and engagement to co-develop an agenda for change To facilitate the development of innovative strategy to engage with learning technology and provide direct support for students developing their digital literacy skills

Some observations and suggestions from the mentors Dropbox Turnitin Add voiceovers to off-campus access videos Create smaller NOW guide to fit in induction wallets Some students expected workshops to be delivered by staff instead of student mentors WiFi Some students prefer 1-2-1 peer support; others prefer staff expertise Passwords / logging on to resources Dedicated IT support from mentors useful

  7. The classroom project Supporting digital skills in the Scale Up environment – large classes with team teaching support (including Library staff, Learning Support Coordinator and student observers)

  8. Highly interactive classes using a variety of technology

  9. Term 1 observations • Problems getting to grips with the Macs • Not finding material on NOW • Groups too large and noisy • Sessions rushed • Not understanding the task • Not understanding relevance

  10. Term 2 observations and Evasys • Using own devices and Macs with ease • Following tutor presentations on NOW • Smaller classes • More individual support from tutor • Focus on group projects • Helpfulness of focus on referencing
